IN DEFENCE OF THE NGOO.

His Excellency Mr. Mahinda Rajapakse,
President of Sri Lanka,
Temple Trees,
Colombo-03

Your Excellency,
IN DEFENCE OF THE NGOO.

It is with deep regret that I wish to lodge my protest against the unfair criticism that is being levelled against some NGOO operating in the areas under the control of both the Government and the LTTE. I am protesting because the critics do so innocently being totally anaware or without considering the ground situation.

For the last 20 years the Government itself had been boasting that ours is the only country in the world that looks after the terrorists well. Is it due to love for the LTTE or due to the concerns for the poor civilians who would be otherwise deprived of their share by the LTTE?. Inspite of this, we had received complains that the LTTE replaces their old stock with the new arrivals and pass on the old stock to the civilian consumers. During the last 23 years, is there any record of disciplinary action taken against one Government Agent or even a Grama Sevaka for being very liberal with the LTTE?. I myself had complained about some officers who had been making payments for no work done. The LTTE inspite of their declared honest policies had encouraged fraudulent acts among the public servants who in turn had condoned the fraudulent activities of the LTTE.

The position of the NGOs is totally different. First of all with grave risk to their lives the Foreigner are working in our country with no personal interest. Secondly each NGO has only a few persons from the donor countries and the balance workers numerically much larger are recruited locally and in Tamil areas they are all Tamils, some of whom are LTTE supporters and the balance give support out of fear for their lives. How can we expect a NGO to do what the Government with all its power is unable to do?.

I know the tremendous work some NGOo are doing. There is hardly one village in the North where the German NGO GTZ had not put its foot to do some work. Can an NGO with a larger number of local volunteers refuse to do whenever a request comes from a LTTE Leader?. Having refused can they survive?.

Foreigners are more scared to see blood. There is absolutely no need for foreign NGO to support the blood thirsty LTTE. No NGO, not even the Government machinery can function in those areas without conceding to the request of the LTTE to some extent.

My only worry is that by criticising the NGOO we are not only insulating the good Samaritans but also earn the displeasure of the Donor Countries that will prove detrimental to our interest. Whatever criticism is made let it be constructive and fair and should not be insulting to the extent of some donor countries withdrawing from our country. Please advice all concerned to avoid criticising the NGOO at random.

Thanking you,
Your Sincerely,

V.Anandasangaree,
President – TULF.

ARRESTS AND DETENTIONS OF PERSONS

08-01-2007
His Excellency Mr. Mahinda Rajapakse,
President of Sri Lanka,
Temple Trees,
Colombo-03

Your Excellency,
ARRESTS AND DETENTIONS OF PERSONS

A number of representations had been made to me by very close relatives of those persons arrested and detained without any intimation being passed on about the reason for the arrest and the whereabout of the person concerned to the relatives. All the arrests complained of had taken place in the nights and the general impression is that these arrests are made by the intelligence unit. There is also a possibility of some unauthorised persons making these arrests with vicious intentions.

Since there is proof of arrest by the Security personnel in certain cases I strongly urge that all those arrested and detained by the security unit , should be brought to courts or at least the relatives informed of the whereabouts of those arrested and facilities made available to the relative to pay visits to them.

Thanking you,
Yours Sincerely,

V.Anandasangaree,
President – TULF.

ARTICLES IN MID-WEEK REVIEW

06.01.2007
Editor,
The Island.

Dear Editor,
ARTICLES IN MID-WEEK REVIEW.

I had the misfortune of reading the articles that appeared in your Mid-Week Review of your issue of the 3rd of January, 2007 referring to my letter to His Excellency the President on the subject of de-merger of the merged North and East. I do not propose to reply to any of those articles but instead prefer to refer the authors of those articles to some of my letters written to people like Mr.V.Prabaharan, his political Leader Mr.S.P.Thamilchelvan, to the Heads of the Diplomatic Missions, to some Heads of States and also to some others including the President and former President of Sri Lank, on various issues, for most of which due publicity was given by you, at times with comments in your capacity as the Editor.

If they had read some of those letters I am sure this merciless and un-reasonable attacks on me, some of which are utterly irrelevant, could have been avoided. My letter to His Excellency the President was written with good intentions, which I am sure he would have understood clearly and need not have been subjected to this type of review, the effects of which would be counter productive.

My mission is something else. I am striving hard to muster support for a solution to the ethnic problem, which is now fifty years old, within the frame work of a united or undivided Sri Lanka, inspite of the un-ending humiliations I suffer and embarrassment, I am subjected to, by the Tamil media both print and electronic, within Sri Lanka and out side. My advocating a Federal Solution and suggesting the Indian Model as an alternative to satisfy those who are opposed to the terms “Federal” and “Unitary”, on which the Indian constitution is silent, had not appeased them. I am branded as a traitor to the Tamil cause apart from facing constant threat to my life.

Such humiliations, embarrassments and threats will not deter me from going forward on my mission to assist in the formation of an ‘ideal’ society where all Sri Lankans whether they are Sinhalese, Tamils, Muslims, Malays, Burghers or anyone belong to any other group will live in peace and harmony enjoying equal rights and privileges in a United Sri Lanka. I am prepared to pay any price to achieve it. I love my country and its people very dearly.

The concluding paragraph of my acceptance speech, made at the UNESCO’S Head Quarters in Paris on the 16th of November before an International Audience, on the occasion of the award ceremony of the UNESCO’s Madanjeet Singh Prize for tolerance and non-violence, is reproduced below:

“I wish to assure you all, that I and my supporters, from the Tamil United Liberation Front, will not give up on our struggles, in striving for the legitimate rights of the Tamils in Sri Lanka, to achieve peace with dignity and as a dignified race, through peaceful and non violent means, so that our future generations, will be able to say “never again” and that our children and grandchildren belonging to various multi ethnic communities, the Sinhalese, Tamils, Muslims, Burghers, living in Sri Lanka, will soon be able to say WE ALL ARE BUT ONE”.

Thanking you,

Your Sincerely,

V.Anandasangaree,
President – TULF.
