Rush medicine and food to Mullivaikal
The curse of terrorism that was clinging on to Sri Lanka is no more and it is certainly a matter that everyone should feel happy about. But the wounds of war will take several months or even years to heal.
Today while the country is asked to celebrate the victory, there are thousands who are weeping for their kith and kin whom they left behind in Mullivaikal, with the hope that they too will be brought to Vavuniya safely. As time goes on the excitement of the people in the IDP Centres is also increasing. People are wanting to know as to what had happened to their kith and kin.
Daily reports from Mullivaikal brought only bad news. At one stage the Civil Administration broke-down there. The Hospital staff too withdrew for their own safety for fear of continuous shelling. The ICRC stopped its services for the same reason. According to the Commissioner General of Essential Service, the ship loaded with food items, could not reach them because the ICRC refused to escort the ship. There is no evidence of food parcels being dropped from the air. There are a large number of casualties reported to be waiting for treatment at the hospital but there is no one to give them even first aid.
This means that there are still people left behind with many injured persons. There is no food and no medical attention. I strongly urge the Government to rush by air, a medical team and food parcels for those still stranded or wounded or dying there. This is a matter that no one can take lightly but act without any delay.
