மக்களை அடக்கி ஆளவேண்டும் என்ற எண்ணம் கொண்ட இரத்த வெறி பிடித்த சிலர் உலகின் பல்வேறு நாடுகளிலும் வாழ்கின்றனர். கொடிய பயங்கரவாதிகளை விட அவர்களின் கொடிய நடவடிக்கைகளை மறைத்தும் பெருமைப்படுத்தியும் வருகின்றவர்களே பெனாசிருக்கு ஏற்பட்டதுபோல் தம் குடும்பத்தைச் சேர்ந்த எவருக்கும் இக்கதி ஏற்படும் வரை காத்திருக்காது பயங்கரவாதத்திற்கு முற்றுப்புள்ளி வைக்க உதவ வேண்டும். ஒவ்வொரு நாட்டிலும் வாழும் ஒவ்வொருவரும் பயங்கரவாதத்தை கண்டீத்து அதை பூண்டோடு ஒழிக்க உதவ வேண்டும். எந்த ஒரு உயிரையும் எடுக்கும் உரிமை எவருக்கும் கிடையாது. உலகளாவிய ஊடகங்கள் அனைத்தும் பயங்கரவாதத்தை ஒழிக்க திட சங்கல்பம் பூண்டு முன்னின்று உழைக்க வேண்டும்

PRESS RELEASE

The Tamil United Liberation Front very strongly condemns the brutal assassination of Madam Banazir Bhutto. The hopes of the people of Pakistan to return to democracy have been shattered. There are a few blood thirsty men in every country who want to keep their people under their subjugation without any justification. More than these ruthless terrorist those who condon their activities and glorify them, should themselves change their attitude towards terrorism without waiting for anyone in their families to suffer the same fate as that of Benazir’s and such others.

The time has come for everyone in every country to condemn terrorism and give all help to eradicate it. No one has any right to take another person’s life. The media all over the world should play the key role in the eradication of terrorism with a determination.

The TULF condoles with the Members of Madam Banazir’s family and with people of Pakistan and all others who have suffered in the hands of the terrorist.

பயணிகள் பஸ் மீதான கிளேமோர்

பயணிகள் பஸ் மீதான கிளேமோர் தாக்குதலை கண்டித்து தமிழர் விடுதலைக் கூட்டணி, புளொட், ஈ.பி.ஆர்.எல்.எவ் (பத்மநாபா) ஆகிய கட்சிகளின் தலைவர்கள் விடுத்துள்ள கூட்டறிக்கை– 06-12-2007

05-12-2007 அன்று அனுராதபுரம் - பதவியா வீதியில் அபிமன்னபுர என்ற கிராமத்தில் பயணிகள் பஸ் வண்டி மீது புலிகள் நடத்திய கிளேமோர் தாக்குதலில் 15 பொதுமக்கள் ஸ்தலத்திலேயே கொல்லப்பட்டதோடு 28 பேர்வரை காயமடைந்துள்ளனர். இவர்களில் பலர் ஆபத்தான நிலையில் இருப்பதாகவும் தெரிவிக்கப்படுகிறது. காயமடைந்தவர்கள் கெப்பிட்டிகொலாவ, அனுராதபுரம் வைத்தியசாலைகளில் அனுமதிக்கப்பட்டுள்ளனர்.

புலிகளால் மேற்கொள்ளப்பட்ட மிகப் பிரபலமான பயணிகள் பேரூந்து படுகொலை கடந்த ஒன்றரை ஆண்டுகளுக்கு முன்னர்தான் இப்பகுதியில் நடைபெற்றது. இந்த நாட்டில் பொருளாதார சமூக ரீதியில் அடிமட்டத்தில் வாழும் இந்த கிராமங்களைச் சேர்ந்த மக்கள் பீதியுடனேயே வாழ்கிறார்கள்.

சாதாரண மக்கள் மீதான தாக்குதல்கள் மூலம் இலங்கையில் பாரிய இனக்கலவரமொன்றை ஏற்படுத்துவதற்கு இலங்கை முழுவதும் அன்றாட வாழ்க்கையை ஸ்தம்பிதமடையச் செய்வதற்கும் நிரந்தர அராஜக நிலையொன்றை ஏற்படுத்துவதற்கும் புலிகள் முயற்சிக்கிறார்கள்.

இந்த வன்முறை கலாச்சாரம் முடிவுக்குக் கொண்டுவரப்பட வேண்டும். இத்தகைய வன்முறைமயப்பட்ட தலைமைத்துவத்தை தமிழ் மக்கள் விரும்பமாட்டார்கள். சர்வதேச சமூகமும் ஏற்றுக்கொள்ளாது.

நுகேகொட, அபிமன்னபுர தாக்குதல்கள் சதிகார நோக்கங்களுடனேயே நிகழ்த்தப்படுகின்றன.

இத்தகைய தாக்குதல்கள் இலங்கையின் சகல சமூகங்களினதும் வாழ்வு நரகமாகுவதற்கே வழிவகுக்கும்.

இந்த நாட்டில் இனப்பிரச்சனைக்கு அமைதி தீர்வையும், இன சமூகங்களிடையே நல்லுறவையும், சமாதானத்தையும் நேசிக்கும் மனிதர்கள் இத்தகைய தாக்குதல்களை உறுதியுடன் கண்டிப்பதற்கு முன்வர வேண்டும்.

CONDEMNING THE BRUTAL KILLINGS

Statement jointly released by the leaders of the TULF, PLOTE and the EPRLF-Pathmanabha condemning the brutal killings of the LTTE -06-12-2007

We very strongly condemn the brutal act of the LTTE, for causing the death of 15 innocent civilians and seriously injuring 28 others by a claymore mine attack at Abimanapura targeting a passenger bus plying from Anuradhapura to Padavia on 05-12-2007. It is under -stood that a number of the injured admitted to the Anuradhapura hospital are in a serious condition. The highest number of casualties in a claymore mine attack targeting a bus by the LTTE took place, in the same area about 1 ½ years back. The people of this area are the weakest economically and they live in constant fear and tension

We are aware that the LTTE have a hidden motive for the claymore attack operations in Nugegoda and Abimanapuara. This type of activities of the LTTE make hell for all the citizen of Sri Lanka. There should be a limit for LTTE madness. I wish to warn the LTTE that the International community will not tolerate this type of activities for ever and also that the Tamils do not want a terrorist leadership.

The people of this country want a peaceful solution and cordial relationship among all. Every one wanting peace should come forward and condemn this type of brutality of the LTTE

ARRESTS AND DETENTIONS

We wish to lodge our strong protest against the manner in which thousands of Tamil youths are arrested at cordon and search operations and detained under the detention order from the Ministry of Defence. It will not serve the purpose for which it is intended and will prove counter productive. It will only strengthen the claims of the LTTE and the pro-LTTE elements all over the world that the Government is harassing the innocent Tamil people. This incident will also seriously prejudice the thinking of the International Community relating to the attitude of the Government towards the Ethnic Problem. The International Community may not understand that this action taken by the Government is to prevent the recurrence of incidents similar to the Nugegoda Bombing in which several people died and got injured. The LTTE cadre are armed with numerous identities and it is hardly possible to detect them. Ultimately it is the innocent ones who suffer as a penalty for running away from the LTTE’s clutches into the arms of the Government, seeking protection.

Your Excellency, you are aware that more than half the Tamil populations from the North now live with the Sinhalese, very much loved and respected by the local Sinhalese and Muslims. Just imagine what the plight of the detained ones will be when they return home on their release? Will the Sinhalese neighbors receive them at innocent ones or will they try to keep them as a distance? The net result will be the cordiality among the different races will gradually diminish giving rise to communal politic. This is what the LTTE exactly wants and the Government unconsciously fell into their trap.

We very well understand the concerns of the Government. A fanatic, may be even a lunatic, on the instructions or for valuable considerations from another fanatical lunatic, leaves a parcel at the counter of a Textile Shop and vanishes from the scene. Within minutes the parcel explodes leaving 17 dead on the spot and injuring about fifty others three of whom also succumbed to the injuries.

We agree that the Government has a responsibility to safe-guard all the people. The action taken will expose the people of this country to greater risk to their lives. When protection is not forthcoming from the Government where can these Tamil youths go? They cannot live peacefully in their traditional homes in the North, neither live peacefully in the South with the others. The only place left for them is the Indian Ocean.

We do not say that the Government should close its eyes and keep quiet. Do the search operations, arrest any one on suspicion but don’t detain any innocent person un-necessarily even for a day.

Please order the release of all those who have proper identities immediately. Those in doubt could be detained till their identities are proved. Please have a team of retired Judge, to go into the documents of identity available with those who are detained and if their identities are in doubt. After these doubtful cases are cleared take the real culprits to courts. That is what the Government should do without getting blamed

It is very unfortunate that at a time when the Government should win over the goodwill of the minorities, the events that take place help only to earn the displeasure of the minorities. We have received hundreds of phone calls from our supporters, from retired public servants and even from relations and unknown person protesting against these detentions and the manner the detained people are treated. Please act promptly and order the release of all those who have document of identity even if the person concerned hails from the North.

We feel that one of the reasons for Tamil People overstaying in Colombo is due to the curtailment of the Train Services to Vavuniya. Since Vavuniya is a cleared area there is no justification to terminate the services at Anuradhapura. Kindly extend the services as usual to Vavuniya.

கைதுகளும் தடுத்து வைத்தலும்

சுற்றி வளைப்புத் தேடுதலில் ஆயிரக்கணக்கான தமிழ் இளைஞர்களையும், யுவதிகளையும் கைது செய்து பாதுகாப்பு அமைச்சின் தடுப்பு உத்தரவுடன் தடுத்து வைக்கப்பட்டுள்ளமையை வன்மையாக கண்டிக்கிகிறோம்.

என்ன நோக்கத்தோடு இந்த நடவடிக்கை மேற்கொள்ளப்பட்டதோ அதற்கு மாறான விளைவுகளையே இந்த நடவடிக்கை கொண்டு வரும் என்பது உறுதி.

உலகளாவிய அளவில் விடுதலைப் புலிகளும் அவர்களுக்கு சார்பானவர்களும், அரசு தமிழ் மக்களை துன்புறுத்துகின்றது என்று கூறும் குற்றச்சாட்டு நிச்சயமாக வலுப்பெறும். இனப்பிரச்சனை சார்பாக அரசு கொண்டுள்ள நிலைப்பாடானது சர்வதேச சமூகத்தினர் மத்தியில் தவறான கருத்தையே ஏற்படுத்தும். நுகேகொட சம்பவத்தில் பலர் கொல்லப்பட்டு, காயப்பட்டதும் போல் ஒரு சம்பவம் இடம்பெறுவதை தவிர்க்கவே அரசு இந்த நடவடிக்கையில் இறங்கியுள்ளதென சர்வதேச சமூகம் விளங்கிக் கொள்ளாது. பல்வேறு விதமான அடையாள அட்டைகளை விடுதலைப் புலிகள் வைத்திருப்பதால் அவர்களை இலகுவாக அடையாளம் கண்டுகொள்ள முடியாது. இறுதியில் விடுதலைப் புலிகளின் கெடுபிடிகளிலிருந்து தப்பி அரசின் பாதுகாப்புத் தேடி அடைக்கலம் கோரும் அப்பாவி மக்களே கஸ்டப்படுகிறார்கள்.

வடபகுதி தமிழர்களில் அரைவாசிக்கு மேற்பட்டோர் தென்னிலங்கையில் சிங்கள, முஸ்லீம் மக்கள் மத்தியில் பெரும் மதிப்புடனும், நேசத்துடனும் வாழ்கின்றனர். பிடிபட்டவர்கள் விடுவிக்கப்பட்டு வீடு திரும்பும் போது அவர்களின் நிலைமையை எண்ணிப் பாருங்கள். அத்தகையவர்களின் அயலவர்களாகிய சிங்கள மக்கள் அவர்களை அப்பாவிகளென ஏற்றுக்கொள்வார்களா அல்லது தூர வைத்துக்கொள்வார்களா? மொத்தத்தில் சிங்கள, தமிழ் மக்கள் மத்தியில் நிலவிவந்த அந்நியோன்யம் குறைந்து இறுதியில் இன வேற்றுமை அரசியலுக்கே வழி கோலும்.

அரசினுடைய சங்கடமான நிலைமை எங்களுக்கு புரிகிறது. ஓர் வெறியன், அவன் ஓர் பைத்தியக்காரனாகவும் இருக்கலாம், ஒரு வெறிபிடித்த பைத்தியகாரனால் பணிக்கப்பட்டு அல்லது பெறுமதியான உபகாரத்தால் கவரப்பட்டு ஒரு துணிக்கடைத் தொகுதியில் ஒரு பார்சலைக் கொடுத்துவிட்டு அந்த இடத்தைவிட்டு உடன் மறைந்து விடுகிறான். அப்பார்சல் நொடிப்பொழுதில் வெடித்து சிதறி 17 உயிர்களை அதேயிடத்தில் பலிகொண்டதோடு படுகாயமடைந்த ஐம்பதுக்கு மேற்பட்டவர்களில் மேலும் மூவரை பலிகொண்டுள்ளது.

சகல மக்களையும் காப்பாற்ற வேண்டிய பொறுப்பு அரசுக்கு உண்டு. அரசு எடுத்திருக்கும் நடவடிக்கை பொது மக்களின் உயிருக்கு மேலும் கூடுதலான ஆபத்தை விளைவிக்கும.; உரிய பாதுகாப்பு அரசிடமிருந்து கிடைக்க தவறும் பட்சத்தில் இந்த அப்பாவி தமிழ் இளைஞர்களும், யுவதிகளும் எங்கே போவார்கள். தாம் பிறந்த வட மண்ணிலும் நிம்மதியாக வாழ முடியவில்லை. தெற்கே ஏனையோருடனும் நிம்மதியாக வாழ முடியவில்லையெனில் அவர்களுக்குள்ள ஒரே இடம் இந்து சமுத்திரம் மட்டும்தான்.

அரசு கண் மூடிக் கொண்டு எதையும் பொருட்படுத்தக் கூடாது என நாம் கூற வரவில்லை. நன்றாக தேடலாம், சந்தேக நபரை பிடித்து தடுத்து வைக்கலாம். ஆனால் அப்பாவிகளாக யாராக இருந்தாலும் தேவையில்லாமல் ஒருநாள் கூட தடுத்து வைக்கப்படக் கூடாது.

அடையாள சான்றுகள் வைத்திருக்கும் எல்லோரையும் தயவு செய்து உடனடியாக விடுதலை செய்யுமாறு உரியவர்களுக்கு பணிப்புரை விடுக்கவும். கைது செய்யப்பட்டுள்ள ஏனையோர் தத்தம் அடையாளங்களை உறுதி செய்யப்படும் வரை தடுத்து வைக்கப்படலாம். இளைப்பாறிய நீதிபதிகள் குழுவொன்று, எவர் மீதும் சந்தேகம் இருக்குமாயின் அவரவர் முன்வைக்கும் ஆவணங்களை பரிசீலிக்கலாம். சந்தேகத்திற்குரியவர்களின் ஆவணங்களை பரிசீலித்ததன் பின்பு உண்மையான குற்றவாளிகளை நீதிமன்றத்தின் முன் நிறுத்தி விசாரிக்கலாம். வீண் பழியிலிருந்து தப்புவதற்கு அரசு இதைத்தான் செய்ய வேண்டும்.

சிறுபான்மை மக்களின் நன்மதிப்பை அரசு சம்பாதிக்க வேண்டிய இக்கால கட்டத்தில் நடைபெறும் சம்பவங்கள் சிறுபான்மை மக்களின் மன வேதனையை தூண்டுவதாக அமைவது தூரதிஷ்டமே. எமக்கு நூற்றுக்கணக்கான தொலைபேசி அழைப்புக்கள் இச் சம்பவத்தையும், மக்கள் நடத்தப்படுகின்ற முறையையும் கண்டித்தும், எமது ஆதரவாளர்கள், இளைப்பாறிய அரச ஊழியர்கள், நண்பர்கள், முன்பின் தெரியாதோர் ஆகியோரிடமிருந்து கூட வருகின்றன. தயவு செய்து உடன் நடவடிக்கை எடுத்து தத்தம் அடையாளங்களை நிரூபிக்கக் கூடியவர்களை அவர்கள் வட பகுதியைச் சேர்ந்தவர்களாக இருந்தாலும் உடன் விடுவிக்க உத்தரவு விடவும்.

கொழும்பில் மக்கள் கூடுதலாக தங்கியிருப்பதற்கு உரிய காரணங்களில் ஒன்று வவுனியா வரை சென்று வரும் புகையிரதப் போக்குவரத்து சேவை அனுராதபுரத்துடன் நிறுத்துவதாகும். வவுனியா ஓர் விடுவிக்கப்பட்ட பிரதேசமாகையால் புகையிரத சேவையை வவுனியா வரை நீடிக்க நடவடிக்கை மேற்கொள்ள வேண்டும்.

குரூரத்தனமான கொலைகள் மற்றும் தற்கொலை தாக்குதல் குறித்து தமிழர் விடுதலைக் கூட்டணி, புளொட், ஈ.பி.ஆர்.எல்.எவ் (பத்மநாபா) ஆகிய கட்சிகளின் தலைவர்கள் கூட்டாக விடுத்துள்ள கண்டன அறிக்கை - 30.11.2007

பிரபாகரனின் மாவீரர் தின உரை நிகழ்ந்து சில மணித்தியாலங்களுக்குள் ஊனமுற்ற ஒரு தற்கொலை குண்டுதாரிப் பெண்ணை, ஈழ மக்கள் ஜனநாயக கட்சியின் தலைவரும், சமூக சேவைகள் அமைச்சருமான டக்ளஸ் தேவானந்தாவை இலக்கு வைத்து புலிகள் அனுப்பியிருந்தனர். இச் சம்பவத்தில் டக்ளஸ் தேவானந்தா அவர்களின் பொதுஜன தொடர்பு அதிகாரியான முதியவர் ஸ்டீபன் பீரிஸ் (66) படுகொலை செய்யப்பட்டார். அவரது மெய் பாதுகாவலர்கள் அடங்கலாக நால்வர் படுகாயமடைந்தனர்.

காலை பொழுதில் நிகழ்ந்த இத் தாக்குதலின் பின்னர் மாலை வேளையில் சனசந்தடிமிக்க நுகேகொட துணிக்கடை தொகுதியொன்றில் பார்சல் குண்டொன்றை வெடிக்க வைத்தனர். 18 பொது மக்கள் உடனடியாகவே உயிரிழந்தனர். 40 பேர்வரை கடுமையான காயங்களுக்குள்ளாயினர். இதில் கடைக்குப் பொருட்கள் வாங்க வந்தோர், வீதியால் சென்று கொண்டிருந்தோர், கடை ஊழியர்கள், பொலிஸ்காரர், பஸ்ஸில் வாகனங்களில் பயணம் செய்தோர், மாணவர்கள், பஸ் தரிப்பிடத்தில் நின்று கொண்டிருந்தோர் என பலரும் கொல்லப்பட்டனர்.

வன்னியில், கிளிநொச்சியின் மையத்தில், புலிகளின் கட்டுப்பாட்டுப் பகுதியில் உள்ள ஐயங்குளத்தில் நவம்பர் 27ம் திகதியன்று பாடசாலை மாணவர்கள் உட்பட 11 பேர் கிளேமோர் தாக்குதல் ஒன்றில் கொல்லப்பட்டனர்.

நவம்பர் 26 இல் அனுராதபுர மாவட்டத்தில் சேனைப் பயிர் செய்கை செய்யும் ஒரு பெண் உட்பட விவசாயிகளான நால்வர் கண்மூடித்தனமாக சுட்டுக் கொல்லப்பட்டனர்.

இவ்வகைப்பட்ட காட்டுமிராண்டித்தனமான தாக்குதல்கள் ஜனநாயக சமூகத்தில் சகித்துக் கொள்ளப்பட முடியாதவை. இத்தகைய தாக்குதல்கள் இந்த நாட்டில் சமாதானத்தைக் கொண்டு வருவதற்கு எவ்விதத்திலும் உதவாது.

Within a few hours of the deliverance of his “Heroes day” speech, Mr. Prabhakaran sent a disabled women cadre to assassinate the leader of the EPDP and Minister for Social Services Hon. Douglas Devananda. In this incident the Hon. Minister escaped with his elderly Public Relations Officer Mr. Stephen Peries killed and four others including one of the body guards of the minister were badly injured.

After the morning incident, in the evening they exploded a parcel bomb in a textile shop situated in a crowded street at the Nugegoda Junction. On the spot 18 civilians died and about 40 got seriously injured. The victims include shoppers, pedestrians, shop employees, students, passengers in buses, vans and cars, passengers waiting for bus at the bus stand and such others.

On the 27th eleven persons including nine students died in a claymore mine attack in the neighbourhood of Aiyankulam in the heart of the area under the control of the LTTE.

On the 26th in the Anuradhapura District four chena cultivators including a woman were mercilessly shot dead.

This type of brutal killings is not acceptable in a democratic society and will not help in any way to bring back peace.

We the TULF, PLOTE and the EPRLF- Pathmanabha while strongly condemning these barbaric crimes, express our deepest sympathies to the kith and kin of the unfortunate victims.

I very strongly condemn the brutal attack on the innocent civilians at the Nugegoda junction by the LTTE by exploding a bomb which caused the death of 17 people and injured over thirty five others. Brutality had so hardened in their hearts that the LTTE will never reform themselves. The news item that 11 persons including 9 students had been killed in a claymore mine attack by the forces that penetrated deeply into the LTTE held area is a real fabrication. Reading this in the Tamil news paper this morning I felt that this news is a prelude to some serious incident to take place in the course of the day and as expected this tragic incident had taken place at Nugegoda.

The claymore mine incident took place in a village which is so close to the Kilinochchi town that the forces can’t even dream of reaching that village and if what the paper had said is true, the end of the LTTE is nearing.

Those who were instrumental for this news to appear in the papers had a clear motive for doing so. It is obviously to show the International Community that the 2nd incident is retaliatory to the first incident and also to justify it.

As one who knows the Kilinochchi Electorate well, I am positively sure that the forces could not have access to the village where this tragedy took place. This area was a part of the Kilinochchi Electorate before the Mullaitheevu Electorate was created.

While condemning this cruel act, I express my deepest sympathies to the families of the victims of both incidents and plead with the people to keep calm without giving vent to their feelings and to see to the safety of the minorities living in their midst.

அமைச்சரும் பாராளுமன்ற உறுப்பினருமாகிய கௌரவ மகிந்த விஜயசேகர அவர்கள் கடந்த 22ம் திகதி வியாழக்கிழமை ஜனாதிபதி அவர்கள் தங்களுடன் இணைந்து தங்களை பிரதம அமைச்சராக கொண்டு ஒரு தேசிய அரசு அமைக்க விரும்புவதாக தங்களுடன் கூறுமாறு பத்திரிகைகளுக்கு கூறியுள்ளார். ஜனாதிபதியால் விடுக்கப்பட்ட இந்த வேண்டுகோள் சம்பந்தமாக எனது அவதானிப்பை கூற விரும்புகின்றேன். நாட்டினதும் நாட்டு மக்களினதும் பாரிய அக்கறை காரணமாக இக் கோரிக்கையை ஏற்க வேண்டிய தார்மீக கடமை தங்களுக்கு உண்டு இவ் ஆலோசனையை இந் நாட்டில் வாழும் பெரும்பான்மையான மக்கள் ஆதரிப்பார்கள் என்பதையும் பல்வேறு இன மத மக்கள் பெருமளவில் வரவேற்பார்கள் என்பதையும் நான் நம்புகின்றேன். பல்வேறு மதத் தலைவர்களுடைய ஆதரவும் இதற்குண்டு. ஒருவருடைய சகிப்புத் தன்மையை மிஞ்சிய துன்பத்தை அனுபவித்து வந்த எமது மக்கள் சமாதானத்திற்காக ஏங்கி நிற்கின்றார்கள். சிரேஷ்ட அரசியல் வாதியாகிய நீங்கள் இருவரும் கடந்த 50 ஆண்டுகாலமாக நாடு எதை இழந்தது என்பதையும் அதை எவ்வாறு நிவர்த்தி செய்வது என்பதையும் அறிந்திருக்கின்றீர்கள். கடந்த காலங்களில் நடந்த சம்பவங்கள் பற்றிய தெளிவு மக்கள் மத்தியில் குறிப்பாக இளைய சமுதாயத்தினர் மத்தியில் குறைவாக இருப்பதே நாடு எதிர் நோக்கும் பல பிரச்சினைகளுக்கு காரணமாகும்.

பல்லாயிரக்கணக்கான கோடி ரூபா பெறுமதியான அரசுடையதும் பொது மக்களுடையதும் பெறுமதியான சொத்துக்கள் சேதமாக்கப்பட்டுள்ளன. அதேபோன்று ஏனைய இழப்புக்களின் பெறுமதியோ கணிக்க முடியாதவையும் மீளப்பெற முடியாதவையுமாகும். தமிழ், சிங்கள, முஸ்லீம் ஆகிய மூன்று பிரதான சமூகத்தினர் மத்தியில் யுத்;தத்தினாலோ அல்லது வேறு விதத்தினாலோ 70,000 இற்கு மேற்பட்ட உயிரிழப்புக்கள் நிகழ்ந்துள்ளன. கிளேமோர் மற்றும் குண்டு ஆகியவற்றால் பேரூந்துகள், புகையிரதங்கள், ஹோட்டல்கள், பொதுச்சந்தைகள், வீதியோரங்கள் போன்றவற்றில் இறந்த மக்களின் எண்ணிக்கை பல்லாயிரம். அப்பாவி பொது மக்களுடைய உயிரிழப்புக்கள் கணக்கில் அடங்கா. பள்ளிவாசல்களிலும், பௌத்த, இந்து கோவில்களிலும் பல படுகொலைகள் நிகழ்ந்துள்ளன. சிங்கள, தமிழ், முஸ்லீம் மக்கள் மத்தியில் 30,000 இற்கும் மேற்பட்ட விதவைகளும், பெருமளவு அநாதைகளும் உருவாக்கப்பட்டுள்ளதை நீங்கள் அறியாததல்ல. எம்மில் பலர் அநாதரவற்ற நிலையில் உள்ளனர். 1958, 1977, 1983 ஆகிய வருடங்களில் பெரும் இனக்கலவரங்களும் இடையிடையே சிறு சிறு கலவரங்களும் நடந்தேறியுள்ளன. வட மாகாணத்தைச் சேர்ந்த முஸ்லீம் மக்கள் எதுவித காரணமுமின்றி குறுகிய கால அவகாசத்தோடு தமது வீடுகள், நகைகள், தொலைக்காட்சி, வானொலி, கார், லொறி போன்ற சகல சொத்துக்களையும் விட்டு விட்டு வெறும் ஐநூறு ரூபாவோடு வெளியேற்றப்பட்டனர். இவர்கள் கடந்த 17 வருட காலமாக தென்னிலங்கையில் 160 அகதி முகாம்களில் இருந்து நம் மண்ணுக்கு என்று திரும்புவோம் என்ற ஏக்கத்தோடு வாழ்கின்றனர். பலர் அங்கவீனர்களாகவும், கை, கால், கண்பார்வையற்றவர்களாகவும் வாழ்கின்றனர். எத்தனையோ சீமான்கள் ஒரே இரவில் ஓட்டாண்டி ஆக்கப்பட்டார்கள்.

எத்தனையோ பிள்ளைகள் தமது கல்வியை இழந்துள்ளனர். தொழில் நுட்பம் தெரிந்தவர்கள் பல்வேறு துறைகளில் தாம் தெரிந்திருந்த தொழில்நுட்ப திறமைகளை இழந்துள்ளனர். வடபகுதியைச் சேர்ந்த விவசாயிகள், மீனவர்கள் தம் தொழில்களை இழந்துள்ளனர். எத்தனையோ பேர் தமது அன்புக்குரியவர்களையும், பல குடும்பத்தினர் நம்பி வாழ்ந்த ஏக உழைப்பாளிகளையும் இழந்துள்ளனர். நான் கூட இரு சகோதரர்களையும் நான்கு பெறா மக்களையும் இழந்துள்ளேன். எத்தனையோ குடும்பங்கள் சிதறி உடைந்து போயுள்ளன. மீனவர்கள், விவசாயிகள், தொழில் நுட்பம் தெரிந்த பலர் ஆயிரக்கணக்கில் வேலையின்றி தம் வீடுகளில் முடங்கிக் கிடக்கின்றனர். எல்லாவற்றுக்கும் மேலாக நிரந்தர பயத்துடனும், பீதியுடனும் அனைவரும் வாழ்கின்றனர். இத்தகைய கொடுமைகள் முற்று முழுதாக நிறுத்தப்பட வேண்டாமா? நிறுத்த வேண்டுமெனில் நாட்டில் பொறுப்புள்ள தலைவர்களுக்குள்ள ஒரே வழி உடைந்த புண்பட்ட அனைவரின் உள்ளங்களுக்கும் ஒன்று சேர்ந்து பகுதி பகுதியாக அன்றி ஒரு நிரந்தர தீர்வை காண்பதன் மூலமே. இதுமட்டுமல்ல இதைவிட இன்னும் துன்பகரமான சம்பங்கள் நமது நாட்டில் நடக்கின்றன. இருப்பினும் நாட்டு மக்களுடைய துன்ப துயரங்களைப் பற்றி அக்கறைபடாத ஒரு சிலர் இருக்கின்றனர். சிலர் தமது பதவிகளை காப்பாற்றுவதிலேயே கவனம் செலுத்துகிறார்களே அன்றி துன்பத்துடன் வாழும் மக்களுக்கு அனுதாபமாக ஒரு சொட்டு கண்ணீர் கூட சிந்த தயாரில்லை. நாட்டின் பிறிதொரு சந்தர்ப்பத்தில் ஜனாதிபதியாக பதவி ஏற்கக்கூடிய வாய்ப்பை உடைய நீங்கள் சந்தர்ப்பத்துக்கு உதவகூடிய வகையில் சகல பேதங்களையும் மறந்து துன்பப்படும் மக்களுடைய நல்வாழ்வுக்கு பெரும்மதிப்பளித்து தங்களுக்கு தரப்பட்ட இந்த வாய்ப்பை ஏற்க வேண்டும். தங்களுக்கு விசுவாசம் செலுத்துகின்ற பாராளுமன்ற அணியுடன் ஒன்று சேர்ந்து 50 வருடத்துக்கு மேற்பட்ட இந்த இனப்பிரச்சனைக்கு தீர்வு காண வேண்டும். நம் நாட்டையும் மக்களையும், மக்களின் ஜனநாயக உரிமைகளையும் இணைந்து காப்பாற்றியவர்கள் என்ற பெருமையை சரித்திரம் தங்களுக்கு கொடுக்கும்.

தேசிய அரசு எவ்வளவு காலம் நீடிக்க வேண்டும் என்பதையும் எந்த கால எல்லைக்குள் இனப்பிரச்சனை தீர்க்கப்பட வேண்டும் என்பதையும் தாங்களே நிர்ணயிக்கலாம். தேர்தல் பிரச்சாரத்தின் போது இனப்பிரச்சனையை தேர்தல் பிரச்சாரத்துக்குள் சேர்க்காது தேர்தல் முடிந்த பின் ஓர் தீர்வை காண இருவரினதும் நடவடிக்கை அமைய வேண்டுமென நான் கேட்டிருந்தது உங்களுக்கு ஞாபகம் இருக்குமென நினைக்கிறேன்

இந்த நாட்டையும், அதனுடைய மக்களையும் நேசிக்கும் ஒரு நாட்டுப் பற்றாளன் என்ற வகையிலும் மக்கள் சார்பிலும் தாங்கள் இருவரும் தங்கள் அணியினரும் சகல அரசியல் பேதங்களையும் மறந்து ஒற்றுமையாக நம் நாட்டை முன்பிருந்த பழம் பெருமையோடு மக்கள் அனைவரும் சமமாக சகல உரிமைகளையும் அனுபவிக்கும் இலங்கை மாதாவின் பிள்ளைகளாக வாழ உதவ வேண்டுமென மன்றாட்டமாக கேட்டுக்கொள்கிறேன். உங்களுடைய இந் நற் பணிக்கு சகல மதத் தலைவர்களடைய ஆசீர் வாதம் வழி நடத்தலும் உண்டு

Dear Leader of the Opposition,

NATIONAL GOVERNMENT

Hon. Mahinda Wijesegara, M.P and Minister at a press meet last Thursday 22nd had revealed that His Excellency Mahinda Rajapaksa the President, had asked him to convey to you, his offer to from a National Government with your party and with you as Prime Minister. Please permit me to make my observations on the proposed offer of the President. At the very outset I wish to say that you have a moral duty to accept this offer in the greater interest of the country and its people. I am sure this will receive the support of the majority of the people of this country and will also be applauded by people belonging to all ethnic and religious groups and leaders of all religions. Our people had suffered beyond ones endurance and are yearning for peace. Both you and the President being very seniors in politics know fully well what the country had really lost during the past fifty years and how it can be rectified. Lack of knowledge of the past, among the people especially younger generation, is the cause for the problems the country is facing today.

Apart from the extensive damage caused to both public and private property worth several billions, the other losses cannot be assessed in terms of money and what is lost cannot be replaced too. The number of human lives lost in all the three main communities the Sinhalese, Tamils and Muslims exceeds 70 thousand, whether combatants or otherwise. Several thousands of lives are lost and are being lost even today in claymore and bomb attacks in buses, trains, hotels, market places and road sides. The innocent civilian lives lost are innumerable. There had been several massacres in Mosques, Buddhist and Hindu Temples. You are not unaware that we have more than 30 thousand Sinhalese, Tamil and Muslim widows and a large number of Orphans. We have very many destitute persons. There had been communal riots on a large scale in 1958, 1977 and 1983 and also a few small ones. The Muslim people from the entire Northern Province had been ordered to quit leaving behind all their possessions like Houses, Jewellery, T.V., Radio, Car, Lorries etc. at very short notice, with just Rupees five hundred each. You are also aware that all these Muslims are languishing in over 160 Refugee Camps for over 17 years in the South with hopes of returning to their birth places one day soon. How many had been disabled with their limbs and eye sights lost? How many rich had become paupers over night?

How many children had lost their education? How many skilled persons had lost their varieties of skills? How many people in the North had lost their fishing and agriculture? How many people had lost their dear ones and how many had lost their sole breadwinners? Even I have lost two brothers four nephews and nieces. How many families are broken and shattered? Fishermen, farmers, skilled workers are idling in their thousands. Above all every one lives in constant fear and tension. Should not all these miseries stop once and for all? To stop this, the only option responsible leaders of this country have today is to soothe the wounded hearts of all the people by joining hands and find a permanent solution in full and not in installment.

Not only these, many more unpleasant things happen in our country. Yet there is one section of the people who are not bothered of the woes and sufferings of our people. Some are worried of their positions and are not prepared to shed a few drops of tears in sympathy for the suffering masses. You may determine the period of the existence of the National Government and also fix the deadline for solving the ethnic problem. I wish to remind you that during the last Presidential Election I made an appeal to the Presidential Candidates to take the “ethnic issue” out of the election campaign and to jointly find a solution after the election.

You as the country’s alternate President should rise to the occasion by settling your differences and accept this offer in the greater interest of our suffering people. If both of you with your teams of devoted Parliamentarians get together and find a solution to the ethnic problem that is over 50 years old, both of you will go down in history as the joint saviors of the country, its people and their democratic rights. I plead with you, as a patriotic citizen of this country who loves the country and its people and on behalf of the people, that both of you and your respective teams should forget all your political differences and unite to bring the country back to its old glory and create a situation for all the people to live as equals enjoying all rights as children of Mother Lanka.

The blessings of all religious leaders will be there to guide you in this worthy cause.

PRESS RELEASE

The conduct of the unidentified gang in attacking and burning down the Leader News Paper Press is highly deplorable and should be very strongly condemned by every right-thinking person and by those who value democratic norms. Writing should be met by writing and not by thuggery or by any other undemocratic means. When the country is trying hard to reinstall democracy that had deteriorated to a great extent, it is indeed annoying and disturbing to see democracy eroding further day by day. The Government in it’s own interest and to save its name should go all out to trace the culprits and punish them which I hope will not be difficult at all.

Who-ever is responsible for this dastardly act or instrumental for it, should not go with the impression that they have achieved something great, forgetting the fact that it will boomerang on them one day, not far away. This type of actives will not help anybody other than brining ruin to the democratic principles and disgrace to the country.

Every citizen should take it as an offence committed against everyone of us and therefore should go all out to bring the culprits to book by giving all information they have or can gather about this incident, to the authorities.

A petrol bomb thrown at the residence of Hon. Mr. Sooriyarachchi, Member of Parliament is equally deplorable. This act in inhuman and cowardly and should not be encouraged by any body under any circumstances. This should not happen even to the worst enemy. A big tragedy is averted, by his wife and four children escaping unhurt.

A question everyone of us should ask ourselves is whether we should tolerate this type of brutal acts in our society which is living in constant fear and tension and had suffered to the maximum due to the on-going war.

ஐக்கிய நாடுகள் ஸ்தாபனத்தால் சகிப்புத்தன்மைக்கும் அகிம்சைக்குமாகிய தினமாக பிரகடனப்படுத்தப்பட்ட தினத்தில் சகிப்புத்தன்மையையும் அகிம்சையும் கடைபிடிக்குமாறு வேண்டுகோள்

நவம்பர் மாதம் 16ம் திகதி ஐக்கிய நாடுகள் ஸ்தாபனத்தால் சகிப்புத்தன்மைக்கும் அகிம்சைக்குமாகிய தினமாக பிரகடனப்படுத்தப்பட்டுள்ளது. அதற்குரிய யுனெஸ்கோவின் மதன்ஜித்சிங் இனால் உருவாக்கப்பட்ட 2006 ஆண்டுக்குரிய விருதும், பரிசும் எனக்குக் கிடைத்தது. அடுத்த விருது 2008ம் ஆண்டுக்குரியதாகும்.

தினமும் நாட்டில் நடைபெறும் துக்ககரமான சம்பவங்கள் குழப்பமடையச் செய்கிறது. இரு பகுதியினரின் மோதலால் பலர் இறக்கின்றவேளை பல அப்பாவி மக்களும் கிளேமோர் குண்டு வெடிப்புக்களில் சிக்கியும், செல் வீச்சிலும், குண்டு வீச்சிலும் உயிரிழக்கின்றனர். வடக்கு கிழக்கில் தினம் தினம் வன்முறையால் எவரேனும் இறக்க தவறுவதில்லை. கடந்த மூன்று நாட்களில் மட்டும் யாழ்ப்பாணத்தில் ஆறு பேர் இறந்துள்ளனர். இன்னொருவர் உயிரை எடுக்கும் உரிமை யாருக்கும் கிடையாது. நாம் எம்மை சகிக்கப் பழக்கப்படுத்துவதோடு கோபத்துக்கும் இடமளிக்கக் கூடாது.

பல்வேறு இன மக்கள் மத்தியில் வெறுப்புணர்வை வளர்ப்பதற்கு பாராளுமன்றம் ஓர் இடமல்ல. ஒரு உறுப்பினர் தனது கட்சியும், தமிழ் மக்களும் விடுதலைப் புலிகளும் ஒன்றே என சூளுரைத்துள்ளார். தமிழ் மக்கள் உண்மையில் சமாதானப் பிரியர்கள். அகிம்சைக்குக் கட்டுப்பட்டுள்ள அவர்களை இரத்த வெறிபிடித்த பயங்கரவாத அணியினருடன் ஒன்றுபடுத்தி பேச முடியாது. இன்னுமொரு அரசியல்வாதி அதே பயங்கரவாத இயக்கத்தைச் சேர்ந்த ஒரு தலைவருடன் ஈழத்து காந்தியென மக்களால் அன்போடு அழைக்கப்படும் திரு. எஸ்.ஜே.வி. செல்வநாயகம் அவர்களை ஒப்பிட்டார். சகிப்புத்தன்மைக்காவும், அகிம்சைக் கொள்கைக்குமாகவே இலங்கையின் காந்தி என அவர் அனைவராலும் அழைக்கப்பட்டார்.

அகிம்சை கொள்கைக்கு கட்டுப்பட்ட இப் பெரும் தலைவரை உலகில் மிகக் கொடூரமான இயக்கமென பெயரெடுத்த ஓர் இயக்கத்தின் தலைவர் ஒருவருடன் ஒப்பிட முடியாது.

மகாத்மாகாந்தியின் 125 வது பிறந்த தினத்தில் மதன்ஜித்சிங் அவர்களால் உருவாக்கப்பட்ட யுனெஸ்கோவின் 2006ம் ஆண்டுக்குரிய விருது பெற்று கௌரவிக்கப்பட்ட நான் வன்முறையை வெறுத்துத் தள்ளி சகிப்புத்தன்மையையும் அகிம்சையையும் பல்லின மக்கள் மத்தியில் பரப்பி நாட்டுக்கு நிரந்தர சமாதானத்தை பெற்றுத்தர அனைவரையும் வேண்டுகிறேன்.

The world celebrates the 16th of November (today) declared by the United Nations as the day for Tolerance and Non-Violence, for the promotion of which I was awarded the UNESCO’s Madanjeet Singh Prize for the year 2006. The next would be for 2008.

The sad events taking place in the country everyday is disturbing. Apart from the combatants dying from both sides, a lot of innocent people also die due to Clay-more mine attacks, shelling and bombing. Hardly one day passes without somebody dying of violence everyday in the North and the East. The score for the past three days in Jaffna alone is six. No one has any right to take another person’s life. We must learn to tolerate and should not give vent to our anger.

Parliament is not the place to promote discord among various communities. I am surprised at one of the Members claiming the Tamil people, the LTTE and his Organization as one. Surely the Tamils are a Peaceful lot and are committed to non-violence and cannot be claimed as one with a terrorist outfit which is blood thirsty. Another politician had compared a leader of the same Terrorist outfit with the late Mr. S.J.V.Chelvanayagam, affectionately called as Eelathu Gandhi and much loved by the Tamil people because of his tolerance and non-violence that prompted the people to call him Gandhi of Lanka. This great Leader committed to non-violence, should not be compared with a Leader of the most ruthless organization in the world.

On this day, as one honoured with an Award, established on the 125th Anniversary of the birth of Mahatma Gandhi by Hon. Madanjeet Singh, I appeal to all to shun violence and to promote tolerance among all sections of the people for permanent Peace in the country.

யாழ்ப்பாணம் நாவற்குழியில் அமைக்கப்பட்டு தற்போது பாவனையற்று இருக்கும் தேசிய வீடமைப்பின் திட்டத்தை திருத்தியமைத்து மகிந்தபுரம் என பெயரிட எடுத்த பாராளுமன்றத்தின் தீர்மானம் எனக்கு ஆச்சரியத்தை கொடுக்கிறது. இம் முயற்சி புத்திசாலித்தனமற்ற, ஏற்புடையதற்ற, காலத்திற்கு ஒவ்வாத, எதிர்பார்த்ததற்கு மாறான விளைவை ஏற்படுத்தக்கூடிய செயலாகும்.

நாட்டில் அமைதியின்றி மக்கள் பயத்துடனும், பீதியுடனும் வாழ்கின்றார்கள். விடுவிக்கப்பட்ட பிரதேசத்தில் அரசு வீதிகளின் பெயர்களையும், கிராமங்களின் பெயர்களையும் மாற்றி வருவதாக ஏற்கனவே ஒரு குற்றச்சாட்டு உண்டு. இதற்கு நாவற்குழி வீட்டுத்திட்டத்தை மகிந்தபுரம் என்று மாற்றுவதற்கு அரசாங்கத்தை குறைகூறுகின்றனர். இம் முயற்சி நாவற்குழியின் கிராமத்தின் பெயரையும், நாவற்குழி புகையிரத நிலையத்தின் பெயரையும் மாற்ற வேண்டிய அவசியம் ஏற்படலாம். நாடு குறிப்பாக யாழ்ப்பாணம் அனைவரும் ஏற்றுக்கொள்ளகூடிய நியாயமான தீர்வு இனப்பிரச்சனைக்கு ஏற்பட்டதும் ஜனாதிபதியின் பெயரில் ஒரு தகுதியான நினைவுச் சின்னத்தை அமைக்க காத்திருக்கிறது.

கைவிடப்பட்ட ஒரு திட்டத்திற்கு மகிந்தபுரம் என்ற பெயரை சூட்டுவது கேலிக்கூத்தல்ல. ஒரு நாட்டின் தலைவருக்கு கொடுக்கப்படும் பெரும் கௌரவம் என ஏற்றுக்கொள்ள முடியாது. ஜனாதிபதி அவர்களுக்கு முழு மரியாதை கொடுக்கும் இம் முயற்சி எதிர்பார்ப்புக்களுக்கு மாறான விளைவையே ஏற்படுத்தும் என்பதோடு அவசியம் ஏற்படின் முற்று முழுதான ஒரு புதிய திட்டத்தை உருவாக்குவதே சிறந்ததென கருதுகிறேன்.

PRESS RELEASE - MAHINDAPURAM – JAFFNA.

I am very much surprised at the Cabinet decision to rename the presently abandoned National Housing Scheme at Navatkuli in Jaffna as “Mahindapuram”. This move is unwise, unacceptable and untimely and will also be counter productive.

There is no peace in the country and the people are living in tension and fear. There is already an allegation that street names and villages names in the cleared areas are being re-named and the Government is blamed for this changing the name of the “Navatkuli Housing Scheme” as “Mahindapuram”. This will also result in the village name and the Navatkuli Railway Station changed as Mahindapuram. Both the Station and the Scheme are so close to each other.

The country as a whole and Jaffna in particular is awaiting for a reasonable and acceptable solution for the ethnic problem and to create a fitting memorial to the President. Re-naming an abandoned Scheme as Mahindapuram looks ridiculous and cannot be in any way considered as an honour shown to the Head of the State. With all respect to His Excellency the President, I reject the proposal as counter productive and call for entirely a new Scheme if considered urgent.

PLEASE STOP YOUR KILLINGS AND GO FOR TALKS.

I very strongly condemn you for what you have done at Anuradhapura last Monday. It is not a matter for anyone to rejoice at. Every right-thing person will curse you for this ruthless act. However there are some people who are comfortably settled in safe places with their families, glorifying you. What have you done, for anyone to give credit to you? In this operation you had been the cause for the death of 35 people, 14 from the Air force who come from poor Sinhalese families, joined the Air force to earn a living. The remaining 21 belong to the suicide cadre of your Black Tigers all of whom were compulsorily recruited and brain-washed by you. They too belong to poor families with obligations to look-after their respective families. I would have hailed you as a brave man if all the 22 persons in the photograph appeared in the local papers with you in the centre, had died. But you have regrettably sacrificed all the 21 innocent children of poor parents, who are appearing with you in that photograph.

There is a Tamil proverb very well known to you, suit you well. Giving you advice is like “Blowing a conch into the ears of a deaf person”. However much I tell you, you would not listen. You are fully aware that Tamil Eelam is not achievable, and if achieved you cannot hold it even for a day. The International Community will not allow it. Then what is the purpose in sacrificing human lives for a cause which you will not achieve and could not achieve during the last quarter of a century. After being the cause for the loss of 70-80 thousand lives, creating thousands of widows, orphans, disabled and destroying billions worth of property, you are now back to square one. You have completely lost the Eastern Province. You will also lose the North but certainly after a prolonged fight, not to win Tamil Eelam, but to safeguard your prestige, the cost of which will be total annihilation of the Tamils in the North. Neither the Tamil Community nor the International Community will ever appreciate or approve these methods. Please give serious thought to my suggestion.

Even now it is not too late. Agree for talks accepting a reasonable solution like the Indian Model or any other model you propose. What-ever solution we arrive at, cannot be in installments but one found without giving room for further agitation in the future. If you can undertake foolish operations of this nature why can’t you help to trace the random killings, abductions and extortions taking place everyday. The President of the Thenmarachchi M.P.C.S. Union had been chopped to death recently. Why don’t you help to detect one such abduction or killing and prove your innocence of any involvement in these crimes.

Please note that I Strongly condemn every killing and do not condone any killing for any reason. You stop your killing in any form and see other killings stopping automatically.

கடந்த திங்கட்கிழமை அனுராதபுரத்தில் உம்மால் மேற்கொள்ளப்பட்ட நடவடிக்கையை நான் மிக வன்மையாக கண்டிக்கின்றேன். இந்த சம்பவம் யாரும் மகிழ்ச்சியடையக்கூடிய ஒரு நிகழ்ச்சியல்ல. நியாயமாக சிந்திக்கும் ஒவ்வொருவரும் உமது கொடூரமான இச் செயலுக்கு உம்மை திட்டத்தான் செய்வார்கள். இருப்பினும் மனைவி மக்களுடன் பாதுகாப்பாக வாழ்கின்ற ஒரு சிலர் உமது செயலை மிகைப்படுத்தி பாராட்டும் தெரிவிப்பர். உமக்கு பாராட்டு தெரிவிக்குமளவுக்கு உமது செயல் தகுதியானதல்ல. இந்த நடவடிக்கையில் 35 உயிர்கள் பலிகொள்ளப்படுவதற்கு காரணமாய் இருந்திருக்கிறீர். அவற்றில் 14 பேர் ஏழை சிங்கள குடும்பங்களில் இருந்து பிழைப்புக்காக விமானப்படையில் சேர்ந்துள்ளனர். மிகுதி 21 பேரும் உம்மால் கரும்புலிகளின் தற்கொலை படைக்கு பலாத்காரமாக இணைக்கப்பட்டு மூளைச்சலவை செய்யப்பட்டவர்களாவர். அவர்கள் கூட தத்தம் குடும்பங்களை பாதுகாக்க வேண்டிய பொறுப்புள்ள ஏழைக்குடும்பங்களைச் சேர்ந்தவர்களாவர். பத்திரிகைகளில் உம்மை நடுவில் வைத்து எடுக்கப்பட்ட 22 பேரடங்கிய போட்டோவில் உள்ள 22 பேரும் இறந்திருந்தால் உம்மை உண்மையான வீரனென பாராட்டியிருப்பேன். ஆனால் உம்முடன் படத்தில் தோன்றும் 21 ஏழைப்பெற்றோரின் பிள்ளைகளை பலியெடுத்தது வருத்தத்திற்குரியதாகும் .

உமக்கு பொருந்தக்கூடிய ஒரு பொருத்தமான தமிழ் பழமொழி “காது கேளாத ஒருவரின் காதில் சங்கு ஊதுவது” போலாகும்.

நான் எவ்வளவு புத்திமதி கூறினாலும் நீர் அதை செவிமடுப்பதில்லை. தமிழ் ஈழம் அடைய முடியாததென்றும் அப்படி அடைந்து விட்டால் கூட ஒரு நாள்தன்னும் அதை காப்பாற்ற முடியாது என்றும் உமக்கு தெரியும். சர்வதேச சமூகமும் அதை ஒருபோதும் ஆதரிக்காது. அப்படியிருந்தும் ஒருபோதும் அடைய முடியாததும், கடந்த கால் நூற்றாண்டுக்கு மேலாக அடைய முடியவில்லை என அறிந்திருந்தும் பல மனித உயிர்களை பலியிடுவதில் என்ன பயனை அடைய போகின்றீர். 70-80 ஆயிரம் உயிர்கள் இழக்கக் காரணமாக இருந்து பல்லாயிரக்கணக்கான விதவைகள், அநாதைகள் ஊனமுற்றோரை உருவாக்கவும், பல கோடி ரூபா பெறுமதியான சொத்து அழிவுக்கும் காரணமாக இருந்த நீர், இன்று மீண்டும் ஆரம்பித்த இடத்துக்கே வந்துள்ளீர். கிழக்கு மாகாணத்தை முற்று முழுதாக இழந்து விட்டீர். வட பகுதியையும் நீர் இழப்பது உறுதி.

ஆனால் சில காலம் செல்லலாம். தமிழீழம் அடைவதற்கல்ல. உமது சுய கௌரவத்தை பாதுகாப்பதற்கான அம் முயற்சியில் வட பகுதியில் வாழும் தமிழினத்தை முற்றாக அழித்து விடுவீர். தமிழ் சமுதாயமோ அல்லது சர்வதேச சமூகமோ உமது இத்தகைய வழிமுறைகளை பாராட்டப் போவதுமில்லை, அங்கீகரிக்கப் போவதுமில்லை. தயவு செய்து எனது ஆலோசனைகளை தீவிரமாக பரிசீலிக்கவும். இன்னும் காலம் கடந்துவிடவில்லை. இந்திய முறையிலான அல்லது நீர் விரும்பும் ஏதோவொரு வகையான ஒரு நியாயமான தீர்வுத் திட்டம் ஏற்படுவதற்கு உடனடியாக உடன்படவும். நாம் காணும் தீர்வு தவணை முறையில் அமையாமல் எதிர்காலத்தில் மீண்டும் ஒரு போராட்டத்தை ஆரம்பிக்க வழிவகுக்காது ஒரு நிரந்தர தீர்வாக அமைய வேண்டும். மதி கெட்ட இத்தகைய செயல்களில் ஈடுபட முடியுமாக இருந்தால் கணக்கற்ற முறையில் தினமும் நடைபெறும் கொலைகள், ஆட்கடத்தல், பணம் பறித்தல் போன்ற சம்பவங்களில் ஈடுபடுபவர்களை பிடிப்பதற்கு ஏன் முடியவில்லை. அண்மையில் தென்மராட்சி பல நோக்கு கூட்டுறவு சங்க சமாஜ தலைவர் வெட்டிக் கொலை செய்யபட்டது நீர் அறிந்ததே. அத்தகையவொரு ஆட்கடத்தல், கொலை சம்பவத்தை காட்டிக்கொடுத்து எத்தகையவொரு குற்றச் செயல்களிலும் உங்களுக்கு சம்பந்தமில்லை என்பதை நிரூபித்துக் காட்டவும்.

தயவு செய்து ஒரு விடயத்தை உணரவும். நான் எந்தக் கொலையையும் கண்டிக்க தவறவில்லை என்பதோடு எக் காரணம் கொண்டும் கொலைகளை மறைக்க உதவுபவனும் அல்ல. எந்தவிதமான கொலைகளாக இருந்தாலும் அவற்றை நீர் நிறுத்தும் மறுகணமே ஏனைய கொலைச் சம்பவங்கள் தானாகவே நின்றுவிடும்.

The TULF strongly condemns the attack on the Air-base at Anuradhapura, by the LTTE, as unwanted, meaningless and provocative. This is not a matter for anyone to rejoice at.

The LTTE should atleast at this stage realize that Tamil Eelam is a wild goose chase and even if achieved cannot last for one day, with the international Community strongly opposing it.

Mr. Prabaharan should stop playing with human life. Apart from the killing of 10 Air-force personnel he has also scarified without a just cause 21 Tamil youths whom they recruited compulsorily and brain-washed. I convey my deepest sympathies for these 31 victims of LTTE’s atrocities.

TULF CONDEMNS THE BRUTUAL MURDER OF MAHINAN LECTURER OF THE JAFFANA UNIVERSITY

TULF condemns the brutal murder of Mahinan lecturer of the Jaffna University

Finding of the mutilated body of Mr. Mahinan a Senior lecturer in Mathematics attached to the University of Jaffna, at the Bambalapity beach is shocking. He is neither wealthy for anyone to abduct him to extort money nor one with any Political affiliations for anyone to claim this as a politically motivated murder. Without getting involved in any controversy he had been involved fully in teaching his students mathematics and it is a mistery as to why he was murdered in this brutal manner. The decease of non violence and terror had not spared even the innocent lecturer. This type of incidents cannot be tolerated any more in our country. Those involved in this cruel murder should be arrested and brought before the Law of the land.

I hope at least his students will go all out to help the authorities to trace the murderer. This is a challenge entire University of Jaffna should accept.

These types of barbaric acts are ruining our culture and civilization. The value of human life has becomey so cheap that every Tom Dick and Harry can do anything and go Scot free. The elderly lecturer who came to Colombo to mark the scripts of the G.C.E A/L examinations was abducted and murdered when he was preparing to return to his duties at the University of Jaffna where he had been working during the most crucial period.

It is a pity that he had met his fate in this cruel manner. Every one of us will have to ask ourselves as to whether the Tamil community has lost its dignity completely?

While strongly condemning this barbaric act we express our deepest sympathies to the wife, children and relatives of the late Mr. Mahinan.

I very strongly condemn the brutal killing of the 17 civilians attached to “Action Against Hunger” a French N.G.O. that is engaged in Tsunami Relief work. As their name suggests they are a lot, the country can’t lose at this juncture when people in the Trincomalee District’s Muthur are virtually dying of Hunger and thirst.

There is no point in saying “Not I, he did it”. Whoever did, it must be traced and punished. Those responsible for these killings had foolishly done it without realizing the consequences. This incident is going to seriously affect the country especially during a national calamity in the future. This N.G.O. itself came to do relief work with the Tsunami victims.

The immediate effects of this incident are firstly, the suffering refugees are deprived of the services of a group of well-trained volunteers. Secondly till this matter is not sorted out to the satisfaction of the N.G.O. concerned, the other N.G.O’s also engaged in similar activities will be reluctant to continue their activities. Thirdly a lot of development work in which many countries are actively engaged in, will have to work with fear and tension in the future. What their reactions are yet to be seen.

Lastly a number of Organisations from various countries that had come forward to assist in the resettlement of the refugees in Muthur will get discourage without being re assured of their security.

It may not be out of place if I find fault with some organizations that are critical of the N.G.O’s in general, without realizing the tremendous work under taken by various N.G.O’s from various countries. If any particular N.G.O is in the fault, deal with it without criticizing all.

I express my deepest sympathies to the families and kith and kin of the unfortunate victims who should not have been killed in this brutal manner for no fault of theirs. I may add that when the Government itself has no writ in certain areas, why blame the poor volunteers of certain N.G.O.S who can’t act independently.

As a responsible citizen of Sri Lanka I tender my apologies to the Government of the Republic of France.

சமஷ்டி கோட்பாடு உட்பட பல்வேறு விடயங்களில் புதிய நிலைப்பாட்டை எடுக்க ஐக்கிய தேசிய கட்சி எடுத்திருக்கும் முடிவு எனக்கு அதிர்ச்சியை தருகிறது. இதை நான் வன்மையாக ஆட்சேபித்து சமஷடி கோட்பாட்டை கைவிட வேண்டாமென ஐக்கிய தேசிய கட்சி தலைமையை வேண்டுகிறேன்.

ஆட்சியில் இருந்தவேளையில் ஒஸ்லோ உடன்பாட்டுக்கு ஐக்கிய தேசிய கட்சி கட்டுப்பட்டுள்ளமையால் கொள்கையில் மாற்றம் ஏற்படும் போது சர்வதேச சமூகத்தின் உறவுக்கும் பாதிப்பு ஏற்படும். 2002 மார்கழி 05ம் திகதி நோர்வே அரசு விடுத்த அறிக்கையில் விடுதலைப் புலிகளால் முன்வைக்கப்பட்ட யோசனையாகிய, தமிழ் பேசும் மக்கள் வாழும் பூர்வீக பிரதேசங்களில் ஒன்றுபட்ட இலங்கைக்குள் சுயநிர்ணய உரிமையை உள்ளடக்கிய சமஷ்டி ஆட்சி முறையை பரிசீலிப்பதாக ஒப்புக்கொள்ளப்பட்டது. 2003ம் ஆண்டு ஜூன் 09ம், 10ம் திகதிகளில் டோக்கியோவில் நடைபெற்ற மாநாட்;டில் 51 நாடுகளும், 22 சர்வதேச ஸ்தாபனங்களும் கலந்து கொண்டன. யசூசி அகாசி தலைமை தாங்கிய அம் மாநாட்டில் ஜப்பான் பிரதமர் கௌரவ யூனிச்சிரோ கொய்சுமீயும், கௌரவ ரணில் விக்கிரமசிங்காவும் உரையாற்றினர். இம் மாநாட்டில் ஒரு ஆயுதப் போராட்டத்திற்கு பேச்சுவார்த்தை மூலம் தீர்வு காண்பது ஒரு மைல்கல்லாக கணிக்கப்பட்டது. மேலும் இம் மாநாட்டில் ஒன்றுபட்ட இலங்கைக்குள் பேச்சுவார்த்தை மூலம் சமஷ்டி அடிப்படையில் தீர்வுகாண இரு சாராரும் ஒப்புக்கொண்டதன் மூலம் இலங்கை வாழ் சகல மக்களுக்கும் நன்மைதரும், சமாதானத்தை கொடுக்கும் முக்கிய மாநாடாக இது கருதப்பட்டது. இத்தகைய ஈடுபாட்டின் பின் ஐக்கிய தேசிய கட்சி தனது பழைய நிலைப்பாட்டிலிருந்து மாறுபடுமேயானால் 4.5 பில்லியன் அமெரிக்க டொலர்களையும், ஏனைய தொழில்நுட்ப உதவிகளையும் வழங்குவதாக உறுதியளித்த 51 நாடுகளும் 22 சர்வதேச ஸ்தாபனங்களும் இலங்கையை ஒரு சதத்திற்கும் நம்பமாட்டார்கள் என்பதோடு இலங்கை எல்லாவற்றிற்கும் மேலான பெறுமதியான தனது மதிப்பையும், மரியாதையையும் இழக்க நேரிடும்.

13 ஆண்டுகளுக்கு மேல் எதிர்கட்சியில் இருந்தமையை முன்வைத்து ஐக்கிய தேசிய கட்சி ஜனாதிபதி தேர்தலில் 49.7 சத வீத வாக்குகள் பெற்றுக் கொடுத்த அரிய கொள்கையை மாற்றுவதை நியாயப்படுத்த முடியாது. அவர்களை போலவே ஸ்ரீலங்கா சுதந்திரக் கட்சியும் 17 ஆண்டுகள் தொடச்சியாக எதிர்கட்சியில் இருந்தது. இலங்கை வாழ் தமிழ் மக்களில் பெரும்பான்மையினர் தென்னிலங்கையில் சிங்கள, முஸ்லீம் மக்களுடன் கலந்து வாழ்கின்றனர் என்பது கவனத்தில் எடுக்கப்பட வேண்டிய விடயமாகும். தீர்வு ஒன்று ஏற்படும் நிலையை அடைந்துள்ள மிக முக்கியமான இவ்வேளையில் ஐக்கிய தேசிய கட்சி தனது கொள்கையை மாற்ற முயல்கிறது. தீர்வு அண்மித்துவிட்டதன் அறிகுறியாக ஆளும் கட்சியினரின் கருத்துக்களிலும் மாற்றம் தெரிகிறது.

ஐக்கிய தேசிய கட்சி இக் கட்டத்தில் சரித்திரத்தில் முக்கியத்துவம் பெறக்கூடிய இந்த தவறை செய்ய கூடாது. 1957ம் ஆண்டு கண்டி யாத்திரை மேற்கொள்ளப்படாது இருந்திருந்தால் இனப்பிரச்சனைக்கான தீர்வு 50 ஆணடுகளுக்கு முன்பே ஏற்பட்டிருக்கும் என்பது மட்டுமல்லாமல் பல்லாயிரக்கணக்கான உயிர்களும், பல கோடி ரூபா பெறுமதியான சொத்தழிவுகளும் காப்பாற்றப்பட்டிருக்கும். ஒரு சிலரின் பதவியை நிலைக்கச் செய்யவும் பதவியில் ஏற்றவும் தினமும் நாம் உயிர் இழப்புக்களையும், பொருள் அழிவுகளையும் எதிர்நோக்க வேண்டுமா? துன்பகரமான சரித்திர நிகழ்வுகள் மீண்டும், மீண்டும் நடைபெற வேண்டும் என்ற சாபக்கேடு எம் நாட்டை பீடித்திருக்கிறதா?

ஒற்றையாட்சியின் கீழ் ஒரு தீர்வு தமிழ் மக்களுக்கு ஏற்புடையதாக அமையாது. சுமஷ்டி ஆட்சி முறைக்கு மாற்றாக இந்திய முறையிலான அரசியலமைப்பு முறையே ஏற்கக்கூடியதாக இருப்பதோடு சமஷ்டி என்ற பதத்தில் வெறுப்புடையவர்களுக்கும் ஏற்புடையதாக இருக்கும். நான் இந்த சிபாரிசை இந்த நாட்டையும் அதன் மக்களையும் நேசிப்பவன் என்ற வகையில் இம் முறைமையை சிபாரிசு செய்கிறேனே அன்றி ஒரு தமிழன் என்பதற்காக அல்ல. நான் ஒரு இலங்கை நாட்டுப்பற்றாளனாக இறப்பதையே விரும்புகிறேன். நான் வேண்டுவதெல்லாம் இலங்கை சமூகம் மனத்திருப்தியுடனும், சமாதானமாகவும் வாழ வேண்டும் என்பதே

DO NOT STRENGTHEN THE HANDS OF THE LTTE

I am shocked at the UNP’s decision to “re-position” itself and among many others, to drop the Federal Concept. I hasten to protest against this move and plead with the UNP Leadership not to drop the” Federal Concept. I genuinely feel that it will prove disastrous to the country that is already bleeding profusely. The UNP too as the main opposition party which, when in power, committed to the Oslo Agreement lose its credibility in the International Community.

To quote from the statement of the Royal Norwegian Government’s Statement of 5th December, 2002.

“Responding to a proposal by the leadership of the LTTE, the parties agreed to explore a solution founded on the principle of internal self-determination in areas of historical habitation of the Tamil-speaking peoples based on a federal structure within a United Sri Lanka. The parties acknowledged that the solution has to be acceptable to all communities”.

The Tokyo Conference on Reconstruction and Development of Sri Lanka was held on June 9th and 10th in Tokyo with the participation of 51 countries and 22 International Organisations. The Opening session chaired by Hon. Yasushi Akashi was addressed by the Prime Ministers of Japan and Sri Lanka. Hon. M.Junichiro Koizumi and Hon. Ranil Wickremasinghe respectively.

At this conference, participants expressed the view that “a negotiated settlement in Sri Lanka will be a landmark achievement with regard to peaceful resolution of an armed conflict. The Conference commends both parties for the commitment to a lasting and negotiated peace based on a federal structure within a United Sri Lanka. Furthermore, the Conference stresses the importance of bringing tangible dividends of peace to all the People of Sri Lanka”.
Having committed to this extent, if the UNP now goes back on its earlier stand it will lose its credibility and the 51 Nations and the 22 International Organisation that had pledged financial support to the tune of 4,5 billion US dollars and technical and other assistance will not trust us for a cent and Sri Lanka will lose it honour and prestige, which is more important than anything else.

Merely because the UNP had been remaining in the opposition for 13 years is no justifiable reason to change its policy on which it polled 49.7% of the votes at the last Presidential Elections. Like wise the SLFP too remained for 17 years in the opposition. The fact that more Tamils live in the south with the Sinhalese and Muslims is a factor that cannot be ignored. The UNP is trying to change its policy at a crucial time when arriving at a solution is in sight. Opinion in the ruling circle is also gradually changing with all indications, that a solution is nearing.

The UNP should not make a historical blunder at this juncture. They should seriously consider how much loss of life and damage to properly had been caused since the famous March to Kandy in 1957, if not for which the ethnic problem would have been solved fifty years back. Everyone should ask whether we should face death and destruction everyday merely to put or keep some one in power. Has a curse befallen on our country with unpleasant history repeating itself over and over again?.

A solution under the Unitary System will not be acceptable to the Tamils. The only alternative to a Federal System, acceptable to the Tamils, is the one like the Indian Model which will satisfy those who are allergic to the term Federal. I am recommending this proposal not as a Tamil but as one who loves this country and its people and love to die as a patriotic Citizens of Sri Lanka. All what I want is Peace in a contented Sri Lankan society.

It is very unfortunate that some Tamil Naad Politicians use the Sri Lankan Ethnic Issue for their personal gains. Every one in India and in Sri Lanka, even in most parts of the world, know fully well that creation of a separate state of Eelam is an impossible task. The International Community is opposed to it and the Indian Government is also vehemently opposed to it. The option available is to agitate for a Federal Solution, with the only one alternative of adopting the Indian model, enabling the various regions in Sri Lanka to enjoy powers equivalent to those presently enjoyed by the state of Tamil Naad.

Inciting speeches by Tamil Naad Politicians will only cause great embarrassment to the Tamils more than half of whom live in harmony in the South with the Sinhalese. A number of incidents the LTTE got involved in were deliberately done by them to spark off a communal riot. Fortunately good sense is prevailing.

What is needed for the Tamils is first, liberation from the LTTE under whom they are undergoing untold hardships. Every home in the LTTE held area is like a funeral home. All grownup children are being taken away by the LTTE cadre compulsorily. Parents who resisted are mercilessly assaulted. The outside world dose not know what is happening in the LTTE held area popularly known as the “Iron Curtain” area.

I am now releasing to the press a few letters that had not been published so-far. The letters speak for themselves. If the Tamil Naad politicians had taken my suggestions seriously the ethnic problem would have been solved by this time. The reason for failure of Tamil Naad, in helping to find a solution, is due to rivalry in local politics. Even now, if all political parties get together forgetting their differences a quick solution is still possible. For the information of the Brothers and Sisters of Tamil Naad, I should say that in the history of Jaffna, no one died of hunger atleast during my life-time.

The following letters are released to the media. It should be noted that without the concurrence of Tamil Naad the Central Government could not have acted, the issue being so sensitive.

அண்மையில் நாட்டில் ஏற்பட்டுள்ள சில மாற்றங்களால் நம் நாட்டு சிங்கள, தமிழ், முஸ்லீம் மக்களுக்கு இவ் வேண்டுகோளை விடுக்க வேண்டிய நிலைக்கு தள்ளப்பட்டுள்ளேன். எனது உயிருக்கு ஏற்பட்டுள்ள அச்சுறுத்தலையும் பொருட்படுத்தாது எமது எதிர்கால சந்ததியினர் அமைதியாகவும், செழிப்புடனும் வாழக்கூடிய நிலையை உருவாக்கக் கூடிய ஓர் அரசியல் தீர்வை ஏற்படுத்த எனது இறுதிக்கால சில வருடங்களை எவ்வாறு அர்ப்பணிப்புடன் செலவிடுகிறேன் என்பதை அனேகர் அறிவர். நாம் அனைவரும் ஓரளவு பொறுப்பேற்க வேண்டிய போராட்டத்தினால் சகல சமூகத்தில் இருந்து எமது தலைவர்கள் பலரையும், இளைஞர்கள், ஏராளமான பொதுமக்களையும் இழந்துள்ளதோடு பெரும் பொருள் நட்டத்தையும் அடைந்துள்ளோம். அமைதியையும், ஓர் அரசியல் தீர்வையும் பெற்றுவிட்டோமேயானால் அந்த நிலையை அனுபவிக்கும் வாய்ப்பு எனக்கு இல்லாது போனாலும் கூட எமது நாட்டு இளைஞர்களும், பிள்ளைகளும் வேறுபட்ட ஓர் இலங்கையில் திகில், வன்முறை, யுத்தம் ஆகியவற்றை கடந்தகால கனவுகளாக மறந்து வாழ்வார்கள் என மகிழ்ச்சியடைவேன். தமிழ், சிங்கள, இஸ்லாமிய மக்கள் ஒற்றுமையாக வாழ்ந்து அனைவரின் சுபிட்சத்திற்காக நம் நாட்டை கட்டியெழுப்பி புதிய விடியலை காண ஓர் புதிய சமுதாயம் பிறக்கும்.

அண்மையில் கிழக்கு மாகாணத்துக்கு விஜயத்தை மேற்கொண்டபோது நீண்ட யுத்தத்தால் பாதிக்கப்பட்டு இடம்பெயர்ந்த மக்களும், எமது பிள்ளைகளும் மிக மோசமான வறுமையுடன் போராடுவதை கண்டு மனம் நொந்தேன். அரசு பாதிக்கப்பட்ட மக்களுக்காக மேற்கொண்டுவரும் புனர்வாழ்வு நடவடிக்கைகளை அவதானித்தேன். இருப்பினும் அம் மக்கள் மீண்டும் இயல்பு வாழ்க்கைக்கு திரும்பவும், எதுவித பயமுமின்றி ஏனைய சமூகங்களுடன் ஒற்றுமையாக வாழவும், அவர்களுக்கு எமது ஆதரவு தேவை. கிழக்கு மாகாணத்தில் வேறுபட்ட சமூகங்கள் ஒற்றுமையாக வாழ்வது சிறப்பம்சமாக இருப்பினும் அவர்கள் ஒருவரையொருவர் மதித்து, ஒருவரையொருவர் மிரட்டாமல், பயமுறுத்தாமல் சகோதரர்போல் வாழும் ஒற்றுமையை உருவாக்க வேண்டும். கிழக்கு மக்கள் தமது பொருளாதாரத்தை கட்டியெழுப்ப வேண்டிய அவசியம் உண்டு. இருப்பினும் இஸ்லாமிய, தமிழ், சிங்கள மக்கள் அனைவரும் சிறுபான்மையினரோ, பெரும்பான்மையினரோ என்ற பேதமின்றி சமமாக வாழ்ந்தாலே கிழக்கு மாகாணத்தை கட்டியெழுப்ப முடியும். இதற்கு முன்னோடியாக அனைவரும் ஏற்கக்கூடிய ஓர் அரசியல் தீர்வு அவசியமாகும்.

எனது ஐரோப்பிய பயணங்களின் போதும், அண்மையில் மேற்கொண்ட விஜயத்தின் போதும் இலங்கை வாழ் மக்கள் ஐக்கிய இலங்கைக்குள் ஒரு அரசியல் தீர்வை காணமுடியும் என்ற நம்பிக்கையை அனைவருக்கும் தெரியப்படுத்தி உள்ளேன். நாட்டிற்குள்ளும், வெளியிலும் உள்ள தமிழ் மக்களுடன் பிரிவினையை ஏற்க முடியாதென பல தடவை வாதாடியுள்ளேன். ஐக்கிய இலங்கைக்குள் தமிழ், முஸ்லீம், சிங்கள மக்கள் ஒற்றுமையாக வாழ முடியும் என்று முழு நம்பிக்கையுடன் இருந்தேன். பல்வேறு சமூகத்தலைவர்கள், இனத் தலைவர்கள், அரசியல் கட்சி தலைவர்கள் ஆகியோருடன் கலந்துரையாடியபோது மிகச் சொற்ப எண்ணிக்கையினரை தவிர ஐக்கிய இலங்கைக்குள் ஓர் அரசியல் தீர்வை காணலாம் என்ற நம்பிக்கையை தெரிவித்துள்ளனர். உள்நாட்டிலும், வெளிநாடுகளிலும் வாழும் தமிழ் சமூகத்தினர் எனது கருத்தை ஏற்கின்றார்கள் என்பதை பெருமையுடன் கூற விரும்புகின்றேன். ஐக்கிய இலங்கைக்குள் ஓர் அரசியல்தீர்வை ஏற்படுத்துவதன் மூலமே முன்னேற முடியும் என்பது அவர்களின் கருத்தாகும். தமிழ் சமூகத்தைச் சேர்ந்த பலர் என்னுடன் சேர்ந்து தமிழ், சிங்கள, முஸ்லீம் மக்களின் பேரால் நடந்தேறிய வன்முறைகளுக்கு மனம் நொந்து வருத்தம் தெரிவித்து மன்னிப்புக் கோர தயாராக உள்ளனர். பலவற்றை இழந்த மக்களுக்காக அனுதாபப்படுகின்றேன். இருப்பினும் நாம் முன்னேறி செல்ல வேண்டும்.

இன ஒதுக்கல். பிரிவினை போன்ற நச்சுத்தன்மை பிரச்சாரத்தையே விடுதலைப் புலிகள் தொடர்ந்து போதிப்பர். சிங்கள மக்கள் எதையும் தரமாட்டார்கள். அதிகாரப் பகிர்வோ, அதிகாரப் பங்கீடோ, அமைதியையோ தரமாட்டார்கள் என தமிழ் மக்களுக்கு போதித்துக் கொண்டேயிருப்பார்கள். இன்று புலிகள் இராணுவ ரீதியாகவும், அரசியல் ரீதியாகவும் மிகவும் பலவீனமடைந்துள்ளனர். தமது அரசியல் விஷத்தை உள்ளுரிலோ, பிற நாட்டிலோ தமிழ் மக்கள் மீது செலுத்த முடியாதவாறு தாம் அரசியலில் முழு தோல்வி அடைந்து விட்டோம் என்பதே அவர்களுக்குள்ள பயம். பிரபாகரனுக்கு ஒரு அரசை பெற்றுக் கொடுப்பதை தவிர அவருக்கு எந்த அரசியல் தீர்வும் ஏற்புடையதாக இருக்காது. இருப்பினும் தமிழ், முஸ்லீம் மக்கள் கௌரவத்துடனும், பாதுகாப்புடனும் சிங்கள மக்களுடன் சரிநிகர் சமானமாக வாழக்கூடிய ஓர் அரசியல் தீர்வே விடுதலைப் புலிகளையும் அவர்களுடைய வங்குரோத்து கொள்கைகளையும் தோற்கடிக்க முடியும். ஓர் நீதியானதும், நியாயமானதுமான அரசியல் தீர்வே விடுதலைப் புலிகளின் மிரட்டலும், குரூரமும் தேவையில்லை என்பதை உள்ளுரிலும், வெளிநாட்டிலும் வாழும் தமிழ் மக்களுக்கு உணர்த்தும். இலங்கையின் அரசியல் தீர்வுக்கு இந்திய முறையிலான தீர்வே சிறந்ததென தொடர்ந்து நான் வற்புறுத்தி வருவது அனைவரும் அறிந்ததே. சமஷ்டி, ஒற்றையாட்சி என்ற பதங்களை பாவியாது இந்திய அரசியல் சாசனம் 60 ஆண்டுகளுக்கு மேல் பிரிவினைக்கு இடம் கொடாது நாட்டை ஒற்றுமையாக வழிநடத்தியது மட்டுமல்லாது, இந்தியா பல்வேறு துறைகளிலும் முன்னேறி வருகிறது. சர்வகட்சி பிரதிநிதிகள் குழுவின் நடவடிக்கைகளை நான் ஆதரித்து வந்துள்ளேன். பேராசிரியர் திஸ்ஸ விதாரண இலங்கை வாழ் மக்களின் அபிலாசைகளுக்கு இடங்கொடுத்து அனைவரும் இணக்கம் காணக்கூடிய ஓர் தீர்வை காண்பதற்கு அயராது உழைத்தவர். அவருடைய உழைப்பில் நான் பெரு மதிப்பு வைத்துள்ளேன். இருப்பினும் வரப் போகின்ற தீர்வுத் திட்டம் ஒற்றையாட்சி அடிப்படையில் உருவாக்கப்பட்டுள்ளதென ஊடகங்கள் மூலம் அறிந்து மிகவும் விசனமடைந்தேன்.

அரசு தமிழ், முஸ்லீம் மக்கள் மீது நியாயமாக நடந்து கொள்ள வேண்டும். பல தசாப்தகால முரண்பாடுகள், மரணங்கள், அழிவுகள், துன்பங்களோடு கூடிய அரசியல்சாசன சம்பந்தமான விவாதங்கள் ஆகியவற்றின் பின் ஒற்றையாட்சி முறை ஒரு போதும் இனப்பிரச்சனைக்குரிய தீர்வாக தமிழ், முஸ்லீம் மக்கள் ஏற்றுக்கொள்ள மாட்டார்கள்.

ஒரு அரசியல் தீர்வு மூலம் இரு விடயங்களை சாதிக்கலாம்.

விடுதலைப் புலிகளை அரசியல் ரீதியாக தோற்கடிப்பது.
சிங்கள மக்களோடு சேர்ந்து வாழ்ந்து நாட்டை கட்டியெழுப்பலாம் என்ற நம்பிக்கையை தமிழ், முஸ்லீம் மக்களுக்கு கொடுக்கும்.

ஓற்றையாட்சியின் கீழ் காணப்படும் அரசியல் தீர்வு அரசு ஏனைய சமூகங்களுக்கான நியாயமான அதிகாரப் பகிர்வை மேற்கொள்ள தயாரில்லை என்பதை வெளிப்படுத்துவதாக அமையும். அது விடுதலைப் புலிகளின் பிரிவினை கோஷத்தை வலுவடைய செய்யும். ஓற்றையாட்சியின் கீழ் ஏற்படப் போகும் ஒரு தீர்வு தமிழ் மக்கள் பிரிவினை கோஷத்தை கைவிட்டு ஐக்கிய இலங்கைக்குள் செயற்பட வருமாறு என்னைப் போன்றவர்களால் விடுக்கப்பட்ட சவாலுக்கு ஏற்பட போகும் தோல்வியாகும். ஒற்றையாட்சி தீர்வு அரசு நீதியாக செயற்படும் என்ற தமிழ் சிங்கள, முஸ்லீம் மக்களின் நம்பிக்கையை சிதறடிக்கும் ஓர் செயலாகும். இத்தகைய பிரச்சாரமே இன்னும் விடுதலைப் புலிகளுக்கு பிராணவாய்வு கொடுத்து சிலர் மத்தியில் அவர்களின் செல்வாக்கை நிலைக்க செய்துள்ளது.

ஒற்றையாட்சியின் கீழ் உருவாக்கப்படும் தீர்வுத்திட்டம் அரைகுறை தீர்வாக அமைவது மட்டுமன்றி எஞ்சியுள்ள விடுதலைப் புலிகள் உறுப்பினர்களின் தூண்டுதலோடு மீண்டும் போராட்டத்தை ஆரம்பிக்கின்ற ஒரு நிலையை உருவாக்க வழிவகுக்கும். விளைவு பல்லாயிரக்கணக்கான உயிர்களை பலிகொடுத்தும், பல கோடி ரூபா பெறுமதியான சொத்துக்களை இழந்தும் ஏற்படுத்திய ஒரு தீர்வு குழம்பி பழைய நிலைக்கு நாட்டை இட்டுச் செல்லும். எந்த அரசியல் தீர்வும் அமுலாக்கப்படும் வேளையில் நான் உயிருடன் இருப்பேனோ என்பது தெரியாது. ஆனால் இந் நாட்டுத் தலைவர்கள், அரசியல் கட்சி தலைவர்கள் எனது தாழ்மையான வேண்டுகோளை ஏற்பார்கள் என்று நம்புகின்றேன். இந்த நாட்டில் வாழ்கின்ற தமிழ், சிங்கள, முஸ்லீம் மற்றும் ஏனைய சமூகத்தினரை ஐக்கிய இலங்கைக்குள் சமாதானமாக வாழும் வாய்ப்பை கொடுங்கள் என்று கேட்கிறேன். எமக்கொரு அரசியல் தீர்வு மிக அவசியமானதே. ஆனால் அத் தீர்வு நீதிக்கும், நியாயத்துக்கும் உட்பட்டதாக அமைய வேண்டும். சர்வகட்சி பிரதிநிதிகள் குழுவில் மிக்க நம்பிக்கை வைத்திருப்பவர்களுக்கு ஒற்றையாட்சி முறை அந் நம்பிக்கையை முற்றாக அழித்துவிடும். ஆனால் மறுபுறம் நீதிக்கும், நியாயத்துக்கும் உட்பட்ட ஒரு அரசியல் தீர்வு சகல சமூகத்தினரையும் ஒற்றுமைபடுத்தி சமாதானத்திற்கான விடிவுகாலம் ஏற்படும்.

A Plea for a Fair and Just Political Solution within a United Sri Lanka

The recent developments in the country have pushed me to address the people of this country, Muslims, Sinhalese and Tamils. As many people in this country are well aware, that at great risk to my life I have devoted the last years of my life to finding a political solution that will allow our children to live in peace and to prosper. We have lost too many of our leaders, our youths and ordinary people from all communities to a conflict for which we all have to share some blame. If we can achieve peace and a political solution, and even if I may not be able to enjoy that peace, I will nevertheless be grateful that the youth and children of this country will grow up in a different Sri Lanka where the nightmare of terror, violence and war will be behind them and a dawn for a generation of Muslims, Sinhalese and Tamils to live together and rebuild our country for the prosperity of all our peoples.

I visited the Eastern Province recently to understand the predicament of the people and I was saddened by the suffering of the people affected by the war over the years. The displaced and our children are living in abject poverty. I saw the work of the government in rehabilitating the affected people, but it will take years before normalcy returns. The people in the East need our support so that they can return to normal life, be able to live without fear and the communities can coexist with harmony. The Eastern Province reflects the richness of our diversity, where the Muslim, Sinhalese and Tamil people are living side by side, but that diversity needs to be nurtured so that they care for each other as brothers and sisters and will not be intimidated or threatened by each other. The people of the East no doubt, need economic reconstruction in their Province. However, they need a political solution that is fair to the Muslims, Sinhalese and Tamils, where all people will feel as equals and not feel like a minority or majority in order to be successful in reconstructing the East.

In my many travels as with my recent visit to Europe, I have always expressed my confidence that the people of Sri Lanka can find a political solution within a united Sri Lanka. I have often debated with the Tamils in the Diaspora as I have done within this country, that separatism is unacceptable. I always had confidence that we as Tamils, Muslims and Sinhalese can find a solution within a united Sri Lanka. I have discussed this with the clergy of all religions, with leaders of all communities and all the political parties and except a negligible few actors, they have all expressed the confidence of finding a political solution within a united Sri Lanka. I am proud to say that many in the Tamil Diaspora and the Tamil community in Sri Lanka agree with me, and that the only way forward is to find a political solution within a united Sri Lanka. Many in the Tamil community are now ready to say with me that we must mourn, repent and forgive for the violence in the name of Tamils, Sinhalese or Muslims. My heart goes out to the people who have lost so much, but we must go forward.

The LTTE of course continues to feed the Tamil people the poison of ethnic exclusion and separatism. The LTTE tells the Tamil people, that the Sinhalese will not give them anything, neither devolution nor power sharing nor peace. The LTTE today is weak, militarily and politically. What they fear most is their complete political defeat, when they can not feed their political poison to the Tamils in the Diaspora and inside Sri Lanka. No political solution will be acceptable to the LTTE, other than a kingdom for Prabhakaran. However, a political solution acceptable to the Tamil people where they can live with dignity and feel secure and assured of their place as an equal community side by side with the Muslim community and the Sinhalese community, will ensure the political defeat of the LTTE and its bankrupt politics. A fair and just political solution will convince the Tamil people not only in this country but around the world that there is no need for the tyranny and terror of the LTTE.

As everyone knows, I have steadfastly repeated that a political solution to our country can be based on an Indian model. The Indian constitution does not say federal or unitary, but has managed to hold the country together for sixty years, and indeed India is prospering. I have supported the APRC process and I have the highest regard for the work of Prof. Tissa Vitharana who has been attempting to create a consensus that can address the aspirations of all the peoples of Sri Lanka. However, I am seriously concerned about the recent reports in the media that the proposals coming out of APRC could have the “unitary” label. The country needs to be fair by the Tamil and Muslim people, and after all these decades of conflict, deaths, destruction, suffering and debates about constitutionalism, the “unitary” state will not be acceptable to the Tamil and Muslim people.

A political solution at the moment can achieve two things. One, it can be a political defeat for the LTTE. Two, it can give the Tamil people and the Muslim people the confidence of living together with the Sinhalese community and rebuilding our country. A political solution with the “unitary” label, where the State is not willing to recognize the other communities as those with legitimate grounds of power sharing will only strengthen the LTTE’s call for separation and give oxygen to a dying organization. A “unitary” solution will be a political defeat for those such as myself that have been challenging the Tamil community to forget separatism and come into the path of a united Sri Lanka. A “unitary” solution will shatter the confidence of the Tamil people and the sense of fairness they expect from the Sri Lankan State.

Any solution under a “unitary” constitution will be a half-baked one. It will give room for further agitation in the future fuelled by the remnants of the LTTE. The result would be a disruption of the hard earned peace and take the country back to square one, into another cycle of violence. Only a reasonable solution that leads to a contented society consisting of all communities will lead to a sustainable peace.

I may not live to see the day that any political solution is implemented, but I hope the leaders of this country, the leaders of all the political parties understand my humble plea. Give the people of this country, Muslims, Sinhalese and Tamils a chance to live in peace within a united Sri Lanka. We need a political solution urgently, but it has to be fair and just. A “unitary” proposal will kill the hopes of those who have placed so much faith in the APRC. A political solution that is just and fair on the other hand will unite all the communities and will bring a new dawn for peace.

APPEAL TO THE PRELATES TO ASSIST IN THE PEACE PROCESS

His Excellency Mahinda Rajapaksa, President of Sri Lanka, in his Independence day message to the Nation had said, “ All of us who celebrate this 59th anniversary of Independence should remember that in the great struggle for freedom all our communities Sinhalese, Tamils, Muslims and all others, were committed as one to the cause of freedom. Therefore Freedom was won not for any one community but for all which includes the Sinhalese, Tamils, Muslims, Burghers, Malays and all others who comprise the Sri Lankan Nation”. Our President quoted from the speech made by the first Prime Minister the late Rt. Hon. D.S.Senanayake on that historic occasion in 1948 as, “Independence was obtained to reduce suffering and increase happiness among people without any discrimination on grounds of race political affiliation, religion or any such difference”. This quote could be construed as His Excellency’s admission of failure on the part of the successive Governments, to adhere to this noble principle, that had brought ruin to the country and misery to its people.

The Minorities of our country as well as those of the majority community applaud his call for the unity of all forces irrespective of any differences and also endorse his views that we can rise up as a country and nation, when we are united. No unity can be achieved with un-contended ethnic groups in the country. So to achieve unity we all must rise above all our petty differences and rouse our patriotic feeling that lies deeply buried in the hearts of many of us, with selfishness raising its ugly head.

The President wants all the Patriots who want the country’s problems solved, to rally round him. I am sure that the ethnic problem would have been foremost in his mind. Every one knows that the ethnic problem is the biggest hurdle to the progress of the nation, which once cleared the progress would be ten fold and with the resources available in the country, properly utilised the progress would be much more than one’s imagination. To my understanding, based on my experience, a true patriot is one who loves his country and its people and certainly not one who loves his country and his people. That is not patriotism and such people will not help to solve the country’s problems. I love my country and its people and do not see any difference between people of two different communities or religions. I do not have a single enemy in any one of the ethnic or religious groups except perhaps those who support terrorism directly or indirectly.

The first Sinhalese I ever met, as far as I can recollect, was the “ Baker Mama” for whom I used to wait every evening clinging on to my mother’s ‘saree potas’. Four O’ clock on the dot he was there at our door-step during his daily rounds around our village, with varieties of cakes and buns most of which, we do not now see in the show cases of bakeries. The next was a midwife, very much liked and respected by the village-folk. In the good old days each village or a group of small villages had a midwife most of whom were Sinhalese. With the limited medical facilities available then, the Sinhala Midwife was our gynaecologist and it was under her care and attention most children in our village were safely delivered. She lived among us like one of us and very much respected by all. My play-mates were her brother and the son of a Muslim trader who lived among us peacefully.

My father a teacher and a contemporary of the late Hon. Dr. W.Dahanayake, when accepted the Principal’s post in a village school made it a precondition to admit children of minority Tamils not given admission till then. He also had a graduate Buddhist Priest to teach Sinhala to Tamil students. School with 100% Tamil students had Teachers to teach Sinhala till 1956 when the Sinhala only bill was passed.

This type of experience, very many during my childhood, helped me to grow without any malice towards any one who did not belong to my community or religion. Irrespective of which ever ethnic group we belonged to, we lived like brothers and liked each others. That is exactly so with the Sinhalese, Muslims and others too in their respective areas. This will surprise the present day Sinhalese youths from the South and will be shocking to the Tamil youths living in areas under the control of the LTTE where they have no contact with the outside world. They had not seen a Sinhalese person in their life-time. Most of them have heard of a train, but not seen one. They are brainwashed to such an extent, that in their thinking the Sinhalese are treating them cruelly and that Prabakaran is their saviour.

I am one who had the rare opportunity of living among the Sinhalese, Tamils, Muslims and Malays and also studying together with Sinhalese, Tamil, Muslim and Malay students. I had the privilege of being taught by Sinhalese, Tamil, Muslim and Malay teachers and had taught Sinhalese, Tamil, Muslim and Malay students. Hence the love and respect I have for one community is in no way less or more than what I have for another community. It is a poem that I learnt, when I was in school authored by Sir Walter Scott if I remember correct, titled, THE LAY OF THE LAST MINSTREL, that inspired me to love my country so much and to prepare myself for any sacrifice for the sake of my country and its people. The author of the poem is asking, “Breaths there the men with soul so dead who never to himself hath said, this is my own my native land”. At that tender age I saw all citizens of Sri Lanka known as Ceylon then, as children of mother Lanka irrespective of their ethnicity, caste or creed. It is this attitude towards humanity that urged me, inspite of the grave risk I faced, to take a pledge to redeem my country and to help to bring it back to its old glory. The blood shedding must stop in Sri Lanka, the fear and tension in the people must cease and there should be absolute peace in our country. The Sinhalese, the Tamils, the Muslims and people of all the other minority groups should once again live in peace and harmony, as equals enjoying all rights and privileges and with mutual love and respect for each other. We can’t bring all the people together by threat or by force. It is only by showing love and compassion that we can win our people. This is what all our religions also preach. All of us who believe in re-birth should concede that it is only by accident I am a Tamil and that I can be a Sinhalese or a Muslim in my next birth. Hence we can’t discriminate against one another.

Because of a meaningless war, over 70-80 thousand valuable lives had been lost. More than 20 thousand Tamils and another 20 thousand Sinhalese and Muslims had been widowed due to this war that had achieved nothing but only brought deaths and destruction. Apart from this many thousands have been orphaned, be-numbed, lost their limbs and eyesight. Billions and billions worth of property both public and private had been destroyed. Above all, people of all communities cannot walk on the streets, travel by bus or train without fear and with the assurance of safe return after a day’s work. This situation is prevailing for almost quarter of a century, with people still expressing fear of division of the country without realising that there is no need for such fears in a just society where people lead a contended life. No one in whose family war had brought destruction or loss of life or limb, will dare to talk about continuing the war. Those who want war must visit the families in which some one died or widowed or orphaned or lost a limb or eyesight or have become be-numbed due to the war directly or indirectly, to feel for themselves the cruel effects of war. I lost six members of my family and we have three widows and a few orphans. Some say that I have taken a courageous stand. It is not my courage that made me to take a firm stand against terrorism, but it is the sense of duty that I owe to my country as one of its citizen.

The whole country is tired of war and is now yearning for Peace which we all know can be achieved, only in a contended society. Hence the need arises for the Government to come out with a reasonable proposal acceptable to the International Community which is watching the developments in the country with great concern. The countries that had banned the LTTE expect the Government to act reciprocally for them to move further in the matter. The fact that the LTTE celebrated their heroes day in a grand scale in some E.U. countries clearly shows that the very same countries that banned them are now loosening their grip on the LTTE. The International Community is expecting a Federal Solution within a United Sri Lanka, as envisaged in the Oslo and Tokyo agreements.

During the last two to three years I had met and discussed our problem with very many including Religious Dignitaries, Leaders of Political Parties, Leading Personalities, various groups of Sri Lankans in Europe and Canada, most of whom are agreeable to an Indian Model as an Alternative to a Federal Solution since some do not like a solution under both Federal and unitary concepts. The LTTE has its own agenda and will never compromise on their demand for a separate state. The Government can strengthen its position and simultaneously weaken the LTTE also, only by offering a solution accepted as reasonable by the International Community, so that they can recommend the same to the minorities with pressure to the LTTE also to accept it. If the LTTE still refuses to accept such a solution the International Community need not be told as to what their other options could be.

The practice of getting the advice of the Prelates existed in all countries during the Monarchial rule in the good old days. It had been the practice in our country too to get the advice of the Maha Sangha. His Excellency the President knows my views in this matter. The mere mention of my name by him in his Independence day speech makes me feel that His Excellency is prepared to consider my proposal too to find a final solution to our ethnic problem. It also gives me encouragement to continue my mission of finding early peace. What happened to the poor Brahmin Priest who garlanded His Excellency at Vaharai should not happen again to another person. Every one in this country should ask himself or herself whether the future of the Tamils should be handed over to a group of unreasonable, arrogant and ruthless persons.

I therefore seek the assistance of not only the Maha Sangha but also of the prelates of all the other religions in our country, to prevail on His Excellency Mahinda Rajapakse to come out with a proposal based on the “Mahinda Chinthanaya” which is in reality based on Natural Justice that no one can find any excuse to reject. I hope his proposal for a lasting solution will bring back peace to our suffering masses after a period of half a century.
